I saw the most public-spirited people of my generation try to reform the system from within and utterly fail in doing so. Pop stars sucking up to politicians and the whole "new labour" project in the UK.
The level of enthusiasm around the election of the Blair government in 1997 was similar to the Corbyn effect today. After a long period of Conservative government characterized by extremely vicious class war politics many people were trying to change things by engaging with the new government. But those new Labour people only ended up a few years later becoming the most repulsive warmongers and apologists for torture and mass surveillance. They were quickly assimilated into the neoliberal mindset of the Westminster village.
