#sheffield Council chamber has been occupied by the people.  There is much dissent in the city, over the running and financing of a road renewal program. The program involves chopping down thousands of healthy trees.  Sheffield has (had?) a reputation of being one of the greenest cities in the #UK.  Also the contractual arrangements around the program are opaque and no allowed to be shared with the people !!!! ???  Which is another cause of anger.

We have a concept of heritage trees. Developers cut them down and pay the minimal fine as the cost of doing business. We need stronger rules and penalties.

@zoowar in the #sheffield case the management and maintenance of the roads has been outsourced to a private multinational - Amey. They declare the trees "antisocial" and "discriminatory" and remove them to repair the roads. One of the issues is that other methods can be used to both preserve the trees and fix the roads, but when this has been pointed out, from recourse to the Councils own "Independent Tree Panel" it's been ignored.

      1. For the chop: the battle to save Sheffield’s trees
        from the Guardian
‘Europe’s greenest city’ has lost 5,000 trees, chopped down by a private company despite furious local protests. Michael Gove calls the destruction “bonkers”. Now, after a brief truce, the chainsaws are about to start their work again …
