Designing interactive electronic museum exhibits must be a fun challenge. Make something that is tactile and responsive, but can survive a decade of kids abusing it.
There are several good examples in the HK Science Museum, often with big plastic or wooden items that have some passive electronics in them and interact with active electronics in the table.

Oh yeah, and minimum maintenance, so no batteries that need replacing.
