The casino I'm volunteering for tonight (if you're not from Alberta, the short story is that most (all?) of our casinos rely on volunteer labour, with a portion of the profits going to the non-profit org volunteering for a two-day gig) has really reminded me of one of the many reasons I hated shift work: when my shift was in the afternoom or evening, I always felt like I couldn't really do anything with my day and was just counting down the hours until I had to go to work. This feels the same.

Adam (inkslinger@mastodon.club)'s status on Sunday, 24-Jun-2018 13:51:33 EDT Adam Also, normally I volunteer to do things I actually want to do. This is not something I want to do. This is, essentially, an obligation that comes with being on the community league board of directors (something I actually want to do). Basically, I'm working close to 10 hours, overnight, because this is one of the main ways the government has decided to fund non-profit organizations and, I guess, justify casinos as a moral good.

Adam (inkslinger@mastodon.club)'s status on Sunday, 24-Jun-2018 22:44:10 EDT Adam So far, this evening has not been too bad. Sunday is not exactly a busy night at the casino, so it's been pretty slack. I should have brought a book. I don't mind not having to do much, but it might get hard to stay awake past midnight if it doesn't pick up. And I'm here until 3:45 a.m.
I'm not working alone, but there's only so much small talk a person can make.
