Ha! But that really was it! Apparently the download of the file had borked and it really was 0 bytes. π
That's what I get for not checking the sha256.-

Ok, I managed to flash it and then couldn't figure out how to get into TWRP before the system restored itself. Some instructions say "rip out the battery and then boot straight into fastboot mode", but this battery is not replaceable. π
Turns out it's simple:fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-20170523-capricorn.img fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-20170523-capricorn.img
And no, the sources that confusingly and confusedly claim that the file needs to be renamed twrp.img are just plain wrong.
