My employer doesn't pay dividends to its stockholders and wages are flat. I have previously compared it to a socialist non-profit.
But with a lack of ambition, unwillingness to take risk and a negative attitude among the rank and file toward anyone who tries to work hard, the following just struck me:
Working for this company isn't like working for an ideal organisation at all. It's like working in the public sector! No one's rewarded for making an effort, so no one makes an effort.

Further, because the profits are split evenly among all the employees, no money can be allocated for especially demanding projects or especially profitable employees. If I'm much better at what I'm doing than everyone else, I'm not rewarded for it at all. Instead, any contribution I make beyond the average goes toward increasing the wages of those who are just coasting along, and any conspicuous display of ambition is struck down, because I'm making them look bad.

I started connecting the dots because I'm trying to work on a business plan for a daughter company the boss wants to start. He's adventurous at heart, but the problem is that he has created a little version of the public sector for himself, and you can't get the government to spend money on ambitious projects unless you convince it to go to war.
