P is a friend of one of my brothers who shows up at almost all my family's events since high school. He had cataracts in both eyes and was about to stop driving (which would mean ending both of his jobs). He reports that one eye was operated on and that DMV recently restored him to active driver status.

There are plenty of risks, so talk to your doctors, but the people I knew who had cataract surgery all say it improved their lives.

OTOH, I would avoid joint replacement as long as you can. Some say their results are worse than their previous symptoms.
