However, the connection here is exceptionally slow, so my client's connection kept timing out every few minutes. This happened on two different servers. Finally, we ended the voicechat. Afterwards, I did a test connection to the #Federati #Murmur / Mumble server. It disconnected once over a ten minute test. So if I do another #Office_Hours voicechat soon, understand that my connection may be interrupted. Anyway, I got some great ideas. A has been trying to document #ActivityPub itself (S2S and C2S designs), various implementations (including the Mastodon API that is often used instead of AP_C2S), as well as other #federated communication protocols such as #Matrix and #XMPP. They suggested that "a better Matrix" might be able to be built atop AP. I used to watch their game streams years ago, but the voice sounded different over Mumble. I'm told that getting a better microphone made the difference.

"Mastodon brought a protocol to a product fight" > Yes, yes, the network is under immense strain as people flee the Elon strain infecting Twitter. But come on, there are folks who really believe this is going to replace, or even stand alongside Twitter, as a massively scaled social network? I call bullshit. While it’s impressive that millions of users have apparently given Mastodon a try, the product is far too slapdash and clunky to keep folks engaged. A lump of coal. No, it isn't meant to be a #Twitter replacement. Keep your Twitter account until you no longer want it--or the company closes and the site shuts down--you can use Mastodon alongside Twitter. And the #Fediverse networks are much more than just #Mastodon. Don't think you have experienced the network and all it has to offer if all you've done is briefly tried to use Mastodon, because you haven't experienced it. > I’ve somehow avoided signing up for the service up until now. Largely because signing up was and is so comically obtuse — pick your server everyone, hope you choose wisely! Have you not used e-mail? It works the same way. You pick a server, such as Gmail or Outlook dot com, and sign up. Please tell me you realize that the people you communicate with are not all on the same e-mail service that you use. > But, but, it’s not a product, it’s a protocol. Yeah, that’s a nice thing to say. And to believe in. But I truly believe the ship has sadly sailed for such idealism in this space. Jack Dorsey can talk about how this should have been what Twitter was from the get go until he’s bluesky in the face. It’s just not going to happen. And he’s more to blame for that than most everyone else. As is he for the Elon element of this current equation. But that’s a different story. Okay, so how about this story: Twitter has only been profitable two or three years of its entire history. Since it started, it has existed by burning through investors' funds. Eventually, with or without Elon Musk's ownership, that runs out. Without such funding, their corporate-centralized ( #corpocentric ) model cannot exist very long. And same for their centralized competitors, such as Post.news, Gab, Parler, and so on. What is left is either #federated or #peer-to-peer approaches, where no single entity is responsible for funding and managing the entire network. So whether it is the #Fediverse ( with #ActivityPub and #OStatus and their successors ) & the Federation ( with #Diaspora ) or #Bluesky, or #Twister, or #NOSTR, the eventual future of #socnets is #decentralized, if not entirely peer-to-peer unless a national government takes over Facebook and Twitter in order to provide effectively unlimited resources. It is the protocol that makes it possible for thousands or millions of instances to displace and replace one big centralized instance. 1/2

A total of 105 commits went into this release by two authors, changing 175 files (4476 insertions, 1958 deletions). This release makes #Socialhome and #GDPR friends. Users can now delete and export their data, and admins can publish terms and privacy documents. Other main features include support for limited content, notifications on mentions, admin improvements, tag search and the new local content stream. See below highlights for more details. Highlights Limited content is now supported 🙈 💪 Limited content can now be created using the web create form. Note, API does not currently allow creating limited content (except replies to limited content). Once create form is ported to the API, things should be refactored there, right now had no bandwidth to ensure both work. Limited content is shown in the stream with a lock symbol. The create shows some extra fields for limited content. These include “recipients” and “include following”. Recipients is a comma separated list of target profile handles the limited content will be sent to. Include following will populate recipients (on save) with all the profiles that one follows. Later on we will add contact lists for better targeting. Limited content visibilities can be edited. If someone is removed from the target recipients, a retraction will be sent to try and delete the content remotely from the target recipient. Currently recipients must already be known to the server, in the future a remote search will be done if the profile is not known. Any known remote profile can be targeted - it is up to the receiving server to decide whether to accept it or not. For local profiles, those of visibility SELF (ie hidden) cannot be targeted. There is also a new stream “Limited” available. It shows all limited content visible to you. Add “Local” stream which contains only content from users registered on the same server. Mentions are now parsed out of incoming remote content and locally created content. Currently the only syntax supported is the #Diaspora mentions syntax, ie @Name. Currently Socialhome users can create mentions by using the syntax manually. UI layer will be added later to choose people using the standard @ syntax to trigger search. Searching for hashtags is now possible using the global search Admins can now add Terms of Service and Privacy Policy documents to the site. Default templates are provided in the admin. These can be published as is or modified to suit the site. Users can export their data from the account settings. In addition to user and profile data, this export contains a list of profiles followed, content (including shares and replies) and a zip file of image uploads. An email notification will be sent to the user once the export is ready for download from the account page. Add possibility to delete user account. Deletion is permanent and will delete all created content including uploaded images. Delete request for profile and related content will be sent to remote servers. Admin pages are now linked to from the new navbar cogs dropdown menu. New admin pages have been added for content and profiles. Many fixes to stabilize the resource usage of streams precaching. See the full changelog here. What's next? Limited content initial support was one of the goals of this release, and that has now been done. One of the other most wished for features has been the possibility to follow tags. This will most likely be included very soon for the next release. The one major feature that has been postponed for a long time is #ActivityPub support. To finally move this forward, it is likely that no other large features will be worked on for the next release other than following tags and adding ActivityPub support to the federation layer. Source code hosting This release will most likely be the last release done exclusively through #GitHub. Migration will soon happen to a #Gitlab instance. While development will happen through Gitlab, there will be mirroring to the current GitHub repository, so that contributing through that will also be possible. What is Socialhome? Socialhome is best described as a #federated personal profile with social networking functionality. Users can create rich content using #Markdown. All content can be pinned to the user profile and all content will federate to contacts in the federated social web. Currently federation happens using the Diaspora protocol. Federating using existing protocols means Socialhome users can interact with tens of thousands of other users. Please check the official site for more information about features. Naturally, the official site is a Socialhome profile itself. Official site: https://socialhome.network. Contribute Want to work on a #Django and #Vue.js powered social network server? It goes far beyond what we did in Friendica when it comes to decentralising core services which used to be available only on centralised silos. We decentralise everything. This builds on work I started in Friendica but it took a platform re-write to fully realise. Some federation bits were added a couple of years ago due to popular demand, but they are in conflict with a couple of core features such as nomadic identity. Nomadic identity is really special. You can create online clones of your channel and pop up at another site if your current site is having issues (either temporarily or permanently). This works incredibly well - unless you have friends on other networks. My original account has moved a few times now. The Federation wrote the following post Mon, 05 Feb 2018 06:58:33 -0800Organization news The Federation info is now a separate organization on #Github, thanks @Zauberstuhl for the idea ? What does this mean? Well, it would be nice to take in a few more maintainers to ensure the site code gets some desperately needed improvements, for example. There are several things that have been requested by community members which I (Jason Robinson) haven't had time to implement due to work ongoing with #Socialhome. My personal wish would be to make The-Federation.info even more into a nice landing page for all #TheFederation / #Fediverse projects. This would mean not being constrained to just following servers running the #Diaspora protcol, but also including servers from #ActivityPub and #OStatus side, for example. The information is available out there, if not in exactly the same format, at least to some level.
