Hey, sometime after I finish my PhD...

...would anyone be interested in being in a Fediverse Virtual Choir to sing some of my work so I can put recordings online?

Eric Whitacre did this (not on the Fediverse) and it worked super well. I... definitely don't have his resources, but I can probably film a conducting track that people can sing to.

Someone on here said something about "non-tech mailing lists"

I was talking a while ago about missing forum sites.

There's probably a reason this hasn't been done, but...

What if there was this forum-ish website software, where, instead of using your email to make an account, sending an email is the way you reply to a thread in a collection of "topics" (each "topic" is its own mailing list)

Parenthetically, Macbooks (at least pre-2018) are remarkably repairable (*despite* Apple's intentions). They have relatively few hardware designs with lots of units sold, so economies of scale kick in. Tools, spare parts and howtos are probably available for any specific Macbook.

(Post 2018 is another story; the "security" chip means replacement parts won't work without proprietary cryptographic keys.)

If youโ€™re not in my particular niche communities, you might not know about the community that exists around old ThinkPad laptops. But Iโ€™m going to tell you about it, because I think itโ€™s awesome!

ThinkPad laptops from years ago are enduringly popular, because they have great support from free software, and theyโ€™re extremely repairable.

Not only are new or used parts extremely easy to come by, people are even designing new parts for these old machines, so you can upgrade rather than replace!

I naively assumed that the OS would perform some kind of reset on the USB system as part of booting, but this is all well past my very limited knowledge of how USB works.

The chain loader thing could already be hacked together (I believe) using an ordinary flash drive. Put (some of?) the Linux boot loader on the drive and put it first in boot order. If you unplug it, the computer boots the other OS off its hard disk.
