@ghost_bird To be fair, tourists are a pain in the arse especially in areas like the Highlands.
The camper van brigade are a particular problem in a region with poor quality and narrow roads. They usually come laden with cheap groceries from home and don't bring much benefit to the local economy.
But other than tourism, what does the area have going for it economically?
@ghost_bird I've spent quite a lot of time up there over the years and it's really not that friendly a place to be. Two reasons:
1. People are still 'outsiders' after living in an area for 20-30 years, or even after being born there if their parents were 'incomers' 2. The sort of people who *move* there from towns are the type of people who can't coexist in urban areas, so are not the best at getting along with different people
Scratch the surface of the Highlands and it's a shit hole.
@mikebabb@bobstechsite My mum was lucky with hers, she dropped the thing and cracked the screen. The insurance paid for a new one - it was barely functional at the point where she dropped it anyway.
@bobstechsite My mum spent four figures on a Microsoft 'Surface' tablet-laptop-hybrid thingie. The keyboard alone was something like £100. It's been nothing but trouble, no user-replaceable parts, no way of diagnosing issues.
@bobstechsite@mikebabb The only criticism I have, and this is perfectly understandable because of its age, is that the laptop screen could be better. It isn't particularly bright and the 1366x768 resolution is a bit small in 2018.
But 90% of the time I'm using it docked with a nice big 1080p monitor and mechanical keyboard, so it's fine. I wouldn't pay hundreds of pounds more for a slightly better laptop screen.
@mikebabb@bobstechsite I use an ex-corporate X220 that I got from eBay, complete with docking station. The eBay seller refurbished it and installed an SSD and it flies along running Debian as a 'desktop' machine.
When I need to travel somewhere, I take it off the dock and throw it in the bag, and my setup travels with me. It's nicer and quieter and more convenient than having a tower buzzing away all day, and uses less power.
I have been running it for >3 years and it's still perfect.
@crakila Irish radio is rubbish. I wanted to listen to something about it from the UK, and RTÉ 1 is doing a pre recorded sportsball programme, Newstalk is in Irish.
I know it's on the Late Late Show, but I can't pick that up here! 😂
I just added a no-right turn restriction for you in that intersection where you said it's not allowed, but checking further, there seems to be no reason why it didn't let you turn left earlier.
