@samtoland Maybe I am looking through ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง -tinted glasses, but what I see when I look at Ireland is a country that's at least trying to move forward, even falteringly.

Here, we're stuck in this desperate, dismal Brexit stasis. I think the effects of the current lack of any sort of national decision-making whatsoever is going to hurt us more than the actual outcome of Brexit.

A batch of SDRPlay #SDR receivers has been stolen and spotted on eBay.

The serial numbers of the stolen equipment are here: https://www.sdrplay.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3225

Don't buy from dodgy sellers - buy from reputable people only!

@ghost_bird This is regular stuff rather than a one-off incident. I live in the area where Jo Cox was MP, and recall a column last year where the editor fantasised about stabbing the current MP.

I don't think many people buy the paper, but it is the only local newspaper in the area.

This sort of thing regularly gets written in my local newspaper in the context of "editorial".

How does one complain about this type of content? This is an actual local paper being printed and sold in local shops, not a random right-wing blog.

If it was on the radio, the radio station would get put in breach by Ofcom but there doesn't seem to be the same thing for papers.

Life is too short to figure out how to install a Mastodon instance. It's the third attempt in as many months and it always goes like this:

    1. Follow the instructions to the letter
    2. Doesn't work
    3. Decide life is too short and go back to doing actual work

@dajbelshaw @bobstechsite Thing is, what browser doesn't put ads in? Opera regularly adds random entries to my speed dial page and there's nothing I can do about it other than delete them. At least Firefox gives the user the option to turn off the (currently USA-only) ads.

One of these days, you'll install GNOME and it'll just show a pretty wallpaper, perhaps a weather forecast, and have nothing to click at all.

GNOME Is Removing the Ability to Launch Apps from Nautilus
By Joey Sneddon from OMG! Ubuntu!
The Nautilus file manager is to lose the ability to run binaries and launch apps directly. The change means users won't be able to double-click onย programs, scripts or apps to launch them usingย Nautilus.

@bobstechsite I'm self-employed, partly because I want to be but partly because the employment options in my region are so dismal.

I could go out and get another job tomorrow but it'd be long hours, inflexible, low pay, temporary, unchallenging office work. There's not a lot else out there.

Anyone needing a modicum of flexibility beyond rigid 09:00-17:30 presenteeism needs to do their own thing around here.

UK unemployment is now at its lowest level since 1975, according to the radio.

Great news - but are the jobs we're generating of the quality that they were in 1975?

Feels like to me we've got a lot of jobs, but they're of the low paid, low quality, zero-hours, slightly humiliating variety.

@bobstechsite I think it's because I'm on a slightly aged laptop from 2011. Mastodon instances seem to lag terribly, as do complex sites like maps. Opera is fine, as are modern versions of Firefox I've tested.

I believe Firefox 60 is to become an ESR and Debian plans to put it in the stretch repo, at which point problem solved.

@devurandom When I get that, it usually means the site in question is blocked by my ISP.

@bobstechsite I use Opera, but with major misgivings about using a closed-source browser.

If Debian update the firefox-esr in their repos to the newer version at some point, I'll switch back to Firefox. As it stands, the ancient version packaged up in stretch doesn't work on sites like er, Mastodon instances.

I know there are hacky ways to backport a newer version from sid but I have always subscribed to https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

@cute_weeds That's Irish rather than UK politics. Abortion is already legal here - except in Northern Ireland which has its own specific problems.
