        !Friendica Admins does anyone uses the experimental avatar cache? It is activated with the setting 'avatar_cache' in the local.config.php. With this, the cached avatars will be stored in the file system, which increases the loading speed and should decrease the needed disc space.

        If you already use it and you are already on RC, please follow the following steps to improve the space usage.

        1. Deactivate it in the local.config.php
        2. Execute bin/console clearavatarcache to clear that folder (this can last longer than a day)
        3. Delete the contents of the "avatar" folder (this can last more than a day)
        4. Activate the avatar cache again

        Background: The folder structure in the avatar cache folder had been suboptimal. By removing it it will be refreshed in a less space consuming way. I gained more than 130 GB on my system.

        When people have said things like "Aaron Schwartz's tragedy was caused by the legal system and overzealous prosecution", I have heard some people respond along the lines of "please respect his family; they have disagreed with this type of framing".

        That objection seems to be 100% off the mark, because here's what his family and girlfriend said on his memorial site:

        Aaron’s death is not simply a personal tragedy. It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach. Decisions made by officials in the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s office and at MIT contributed to his death. The US Attorney’s office pursued an exceptionally harsh array of charges, carrying potentially over 30 years in prison, to punish an alleged crime that had no victims. Meanwhile, unlike JSTOR, MIT refused to stand up for Aaron and its own community’s most cherished principles.

              Ich habe es immer schΓΆn gefunden, im MyMuesli-Laden neue MΓΌslis zu entdecken und zu probieren und ich konnte schnell nachkaufen, wenn meine VorrΓ€te zur Neige gingen. Gleichzeitig hat mich irgendwann die Mailflut gestΓΆrt, die von MyMuesli kam. Irgendwie war gefΓΌhlt jede Woche irgendeine Aktion mit Rabatten. Gleichzeitig wurde man von mehr Rabattcodes ΓΌberflutet als man einlΓΆsen konnte. Und dann hatte ich auch noch festgestellt, dass man Bonuspunkte aus deren Bonusprogramm nur einlΓΆsen konnte, wenn man alle Tracker auf der Seite erlaubt hat.

              On April 21, 2010, the antivirus company McAfee released an update to its software used by its corporate customers. The update deleted a key Windows file, causing millions of computers around the world to crash and repeatedly reboot. Much like the CrowdStrike mistake, the McAfee problem required a manual fix.

              Kurtz was McAfee's chief technology officer at the time. Months later, Intel acquired McAfee. And several months after that Kurtz left the company. He founded CrowdStrike in 2012 and has been its CEO ever since.

                In this new apartment, 100 m from the previous apartment, youtube is often crap, stutters and downgrades to 144p. In the old place youtube always ran without a hitch.

                It's the same ISP in the same physical residential block, just one tower over. speedtest.net says ping is 14 ms, download is 300 Mbps, upload is 150 Mbps. It's a mystery.

                  @AN/CRM-114 There is no government firewall between my home and the internet exchange two kilometers away where google's servers probably are.

                  The equipment in my home is the same router and the same APs as before.

                  It's possible that the building's router could be different and suffer from buffer bloat, but then I feel like that should be visible in the ping latency.

                  I've been assuming WebM is "web movie" and WebP is "web picture".

                  Someone said they thought P in WebP is for "predictive". I don't think so.

                  VP8 uses (as do other video codecs) P-frames, predictive or predicted frames which are deltas to the frames before them, and I-frames, intra frames, which are complete images. VP8 does not have bidirectional B-frames. I guess this is where "P is for 'predictive' " came from, but WebP does not use P-frames, WebP is based on VP8 I-frames.

                  Maybe the P comes from the P in VP8? I have not been able to find an explanation for what VP3/4/5/6/7/8/9 stands for.

                  The announcement, the documentation, the Wikipedia article, neither of them explains the WebP name.

                  The M/o/Vfuscator (short 'o', sounds like "mobfuscator") compiles programs into "mov" instructions, and only "mov" instructions. Arithmetic, comparisons, jumps, function calls, and everything else a program needs are all performed through mov operations; there is no self-modifying code, no transport-triggered calculation, and no other form of non-mov cheating.

                  I'm listening to a discussion in French with an interpreter doing voiceover in English, and I think the interpreter is Scottish, but trying hard to remember to speak English English.

                  In general it sounds English, but when there's a lot to catch up on saying, the accent becomes more Scottish.

                    Arrgh, I did it again.

                    I had a meeting last night, and the other guy on the call opened up with "hey, Claes, how are you doing" and I answered with something like "good, good, all good ..." ... and then we kind of started the meeting. And the most important thing is that you ask, not that you give a relevant answer, and I didn't ask, I fumbled the asking.

                      Getting increasingly annoyed with Outlook's grammar+style check. It gives me squiggly lines with suggestions that erase nuance and dilute meaning, for the sake of brevity/concision.

                      No, "if" doesn't mean the same thing as "as long as", it lacks the connotation of of concern and almost an ultimatum. "if", in comparison, is a shoulder shrug.
