@musicman Yeah, I’m sure it is weird proxy server nonsense. On one network, DNS cannot find the domain. But as soon as I use a #VPN or sometimes just a different organization’s #DNS server, everything works fine. I won’t name the network, but their full name used to have “telephone and telegraph” at the end.

I had heard people talking about a #Facebook outage. Now I see #Cloudflare’s post about it:

    https://blog.cloudflare.com/october-2021-facebook-outage/

#DNS changes preceded (and later ended) the outage.

Now #real_talk: No matter how much you like Facebook, #Instagram, #Whatsapp, Facebook #Messenger … you need to make sure that you and your contacts have another active channel of communication that can be used in place of each of those. Because your communications and relationships with people you care about are too important to entrust them solely to one corporation.

      from The Cloudflare Blog
Today at 1651 UTC, we opened an internal incident entitled "Facebook DNS lookup returning SERVFAIL" because we were worried that something was wrong with our DNS resolver 1.1.1.1. But as we were about to post on our public status page we realized something else more serious was going on.

#ISC's #BIND continues to have security holes one after another. I do sometimes wonder why we (the world as a whole) haven't migrated to something descended from DJBDNS.

Now someone else says it was a #regex issue that brought down #CloudFlare #DNS ... which also happened last year (2019-07-02, according to #Wikipedia). I have not gone looking for an authoritative source, so consider this an unconfirmed rumor.

@kravietz it would require SSB apps to include a node of the namechain (if they want to implement the feature) and check any unfamiliar public keys against it whenever they download new posts. Like the way web browsers include code to reference the #DNS system, so they can map the domain name of a website to the IP address of the webserver that hosts it.
