A somewhat older (2016) but still interesting article about the history of #Hubzilla. Also contains a biography of Mike Macgirvin the developer that started #Friendica, Hubzilla and #Osada. It's interesting to learn that Mike launched Mistpark, the predecessor of Friendica, before #Diaspora*.
This is why conflating #mastodon and the #fediverse is bad. People outside the fediverse just start thinking they're the same thing or that mastodon is social. I'm sure there mastodon team is fine with that, but it's not good for the fediverse. We've seen it more broadly on the web with IE, and more recently, Chrome. Open standards have to have a healthy ecosystem of implementations or they don't remain open.
Dear #fediverse. I work as an #architect and design buildings that harm the planet. I am looking for a practicing #engineer who can teach me building energy modelling using #opensource tools. I have a background in software dev, run #gentoo#linux and am willing to learn down to the details.
I do not have a background in heat transfer or thermodynamics, which is why I am asking for a tutor.
@clacke that's not impression that was given by the merger announcement. You could say the ends (the vital and growing #fediverse we have now) justifies the means, but I tend to think that honesty is the best policy (unless someone will be endangered as a result) ... @dansup
Rhâ... Je suis certain d'avoir vu passer un compte d'un ou d'une conductrice de train helvétique, et pas moyen de remettre la main dessus. Je n'ai pourtant pas rêvé...
'Forking' the #fediverse article from #Wikipedia onto another #MediaWiki instance (#P2PF) results in a mess full of redlinks, and a broken table, whether I copy from the view page, or the edit page. There's got to be an easier way to do this! Some way of combining some of the portability concepts of the #SmallestFederatedWiki into MediaWiki?
@InternetKevin there's a paradox in this, the more of us vote with our feet, and move to more user-respecting online platforms (like the #fediverse), the more that conversations on the #DataFarms will give the impression that nobody cares. Even to the degree that we keep using datafarms to try to balance the debate, like digital bodhisattvas, the algorithms can just disappear anything critical we say. This is part of the problem and the anti-democratic danger of those platforms. @nolan
I joined #Mastodon.Social during, what will be known as, the great transhumance of April 2017. But it's time for me to move again. I've come to find #Merveilles.town as a place where I would feel at home. It's also a way for me to find a smaller community while still staying connected to the rest of the #Fediverse. And I look forward to that. So please click the follow button at @xuv if you want to stay in touch.
@noorul many of these smaller marketplaces still exist eg #MightyApe in Aotearoa (NZ) and #FishPond in the UK, but the #PlatformMonopoly dynamic means they struggle for oxygen in the face of massive players like #Amazon and #Ebay. As with the #fediverse, federating multiple independent marketplaces together, allows them to combine their #NetworkEffect, and compete cooperatively (if that makes sense ;) @fitheach
