Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 20:43:53 EDT Brian Ó I came home from a weekend in NYC to find my blackberries had flopped over thanks to tropical whatever Debbie. I got them righted again without catastrophic damage, but it's relying on some mechanical assistance. I may have to get some extra long stakes or rebar to hold them up more permanently.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 17:38:18 EDT Brian Ó Weirdly dinky/odd shaped harvest of these white potatoes, compared to the reds. Not sure these are worth saving for seed. Might just eat them and find another variety for the spring.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 10:55:59 EDT Brian Ó I terminated my cover crop of beans this morning and re-sowed. This was a month's worth of growth in the July heat. I suspect it will slow down a little as the weather cools. I wonder how many more cycles I can get out of it before Fall arrives in earnest.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Thursday, 08-Aug-2024 20:08:45 EDT Brian Ó Momentous decisions have been made. In preparation for spring I’m going to build two more 6x4 cedar raised beds like the one in the photo, which will go side by side in the foreground where that blue tote currently sits. There should be enough soil in the old rotted raised bed hiding in the back right to more or less fill them both. The cement block raised bed will then be relocated to that back corner. I’ve also propagated the two large blackberry plants against the fence into four plants, so those should take off next season as well. Behind this photo to the right, I’ve also tarped off an 8x10 area of lawn to plant wildflowers in the spring. We may get some fruit trees next year as well.
Lots of work ahead. I owe my lower back a preemptive apology.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jul-2024 10:17:16 EDT Brian Ó I found this barrel on the side of the road outside a marina. I called them to make sure it wasn't used to store anything nasty, and they couldn't tell me for certain, but it's free of residue/smell on the inside, and the bung was sealed with caulking, which makes me pretty certain it was used as a dock float. The faded print on the outside says it was originally for apple juice concentrate, so I know the plastic is food safe. I'm confident enough, despite its uncertain provenance, to use it as a rain barrel. I got it set up in it's future home and 3D printed a cap where it was missing one. Now I'm just waiting for the spigot and diverter I ordered to arrive. Unfortunately, due to where the downspouts are placed, I had to put it on the opposite side of the house to my garden. It'll be good exercise, I guess,

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jul-2024 16:25:12 EDT Brian Ó I harvested my Norland red potatoes a bit early, as my plan is to use them as seed potatoes in the spring. This was the result of two plants sown in the beginning of May. Plenty to fill a 6x4" raised bed next year.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Wednesday, 17-Jul-2024 18:27:32 EDT Brian Ó I sowed these dry beans from the supermarket on Sunday. No sprouts were visible this morning, and then this! Apparently today was prime bean weather.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Saturday, 13-Jul-2024 15:28:07 EDT Brian Ó Today I set about moving this abandoned garden bed to a new spot. Once I got it dug out it became apparent that it was unfortunately completely rotted. So, I made a quick trip for some cedar decking and whacked together something 2/3 the size, which fits the space better anyway. Then I dug out the whole area another 8" to bury a bunch of old logs, and filled it back up. I may have over-did it a bit. My back's going to be very mad at me tomorrow.
Let's see what wacky order D* puts these photos in.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Friday, 05-Jul-2024 19:29:28 EDT Brian Ó 8 days under black plastic. The weeds seem pretty baked. I think I'll give them another week, just to be sure.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Jul-2024 18:28:37 EDT Brian Ó I set up a camera in the compost bin a few days ago and I've been watching a skunk visit every night for several hours, as well as raccoons. I've known this was happening for years, but somehow witnessing it directly spurred me into action. I watched a racoon walk off with an entire breakfast burrito. That's a lot of stolen nutrients!
I had some lumber left over from an indoor remodeling project, and some chicken wire, so I boshed this together. We'll see how effective it is.

Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Thursday, 27-Jun-2024 18:26:49 EDT Brian Ó A former housemate put these beds in several years ago, too close to the fence such that the mower won't fit behind them. This has been an annoyance. The fact that she only half-heartedly gardening in them for a year or two and then let them be taken over by weeds is a further annoyance. But now she's gone, and I'm going to try to rehabilitate (and move) them, starting with this one.
Once the plastic hopefully does it's thing for a couple of weeks I'll need to remove all the soil, relocate the frame, then fill it back in. After that, it'll be too late to plant anything to harvest so I plan to cover-crop it with beans until we get into frost territory, then tuck it in for a long winter's nap under a blanket of compost until I can plant potatoes in the spring.
