  Walmart is the latest to jump into the fast-moving bidding war for TikTok, as the retailing giant said Thursday that it is partnering with Microsoft on a deal to acquire the app.
  
  As first reported by CNBC, Walmart said it believes TikTok’s integration of e-commerce and advertising in the popular video-sharing app would be a valuable fit for its business.
  
  “We believe a potential relationship with TikTok U.S. in partnership with Microsoft could add this key functionality and provide Walmart with an important way for us to reach and serve omnichannel customers as well as grow our third-party marketplace and advertising businesses,” Walmart said in an emailed statement to Variety.
  
  The Bentonville, Ark.-based company added, “We are confident that a Walmart and Microsoft partnership would meet both the expectations of U.S. TikTok users while satisfying the concerns of US government regulators.”
  
  A rep for Microsoft, asked for comment about the Walmart partnership, said that “at this time, the company has nothing to share.”
  
  The other leading suitor for TikTok is Oracle, led by pro-Trump chairman Larry Ellison. A sale of the app by parent company ByteDance would encompass TikTok’s U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand operations.
  
  The latest development for TikTok comes after CEO Kevin Mayer said Wednesday that he would resign, a little over three months after leaving Disney. His exit, signaling that a sale of TikTok is inevitable, comes after the Trump administration ordered Chinese internet giant ByteDance to sell the TikTok app business in the U.S., citing national-security fears, no later than Nov. 12. TikTok sued Trump and the administration over the forced divestiture but ByteDance now appears to be fully on a path to a sale.
  
  Microsoft previously said it expected to conclude acquisition talks with ByteDance for TikTok by Sept. 15.
  
  The pairing of Microsoft and Walmart “is the final piece of the puzzle that ultimately cements Microsoft successfully acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations for likely $35 billion to $40 billion,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said.
  
  For Walmart, the big question is how much capital it would need to contribute toward a deal for TikTok as well as what the opportunity cost is in purchasing an ownership stake in the app, UBS analyst Michael Lasser wrote in a note.
  
  TikTok would let Walmart tap into “a rapidly growing social media platform” to expand its push into e-commerce and digital advertising, the analyst wrote. “[C]onnecting with a younger audience is vital to [Walmart’s] long-term outlook, especially as more digitally native generations move into their prime consumption years,” Lasser wrote. “Having a better understanding of these younger consumers through their social media habits would be valuable to WMT.”
  
  Currently, TikTok says it has more than 100 million U.S. monthly active users (up from 11 million in January 2019) and over 50 million daily users. To date, the app has been downloaded more than 2 billion times worldwide.

  Kevin Mayer has stepped down as CEO of TikTok, just months after taking the job and after recent pressure by President Trump over the app’s security, Variety has confirmed.
  
  Mayer sent a letter to TikTok and ByteDance employees on Wednesday night, announcing his decision.
  
  “In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for. Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company,” Mayer said in the letter. “I understand that the role that I signed up for — including running TikTok globally — will look very different as a result of the US administration’s action to push for a sell-off of the U.S. business.”
  
  Mayer’s exit comes just weeks after President Trump signed an executive order to ban TikTok unless its parent company ByteDance sold its U.S. assets to an American company within 90 days. Microsoft is in talks to buy the short-form video app, while other U.S. buyers who are reportedly interested include Twitter and software giant Oracle.
  
  Before joining TikTok in May, Mayer was The Walt Disney Company’s chairman of the direct-to-consumer & international division. He previously served as senior executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Disney.
  
  “We appreciate that the political dynamics of the last few months have significantly changed what the scope of Kevin’s role would be going forward, and fully respect his decision,” TikTok said to Variety. “We thank him for his time at the company and wish him well.”
  
  Read Mayer’s letter below.
  
  In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for.   I want to be clear that this decision has nothing to do with the company, what I see for our future, or the belief I have in what we are building. Yiming understands my decision and I thank him for his support on this.
  
  As we look to the next phase of this company, there is no doubt that the future is incredibly bright. For our users, any potential structural changes should not affect their experience, and I strongly believe that our community will be more creative and diverse than ever. The platform will continue to provide our global community an amazing and integrated experience as it does today. Similarly, from an employee perspective, I believe that the vast majority of work will be unchanged.

  In his most recent podcast episode on Wednesday, Aug. 26, Budden spent the better part of three-plus hours deconstructing his deal with the streaming platform, suggesting that he will no longer be on Spotify when the exclusive contract expires in a month — representing about seven more episodes.
  
  “September 23rd, I cannot tell you where this podcast will be,” Budden said. “But as it stands, I can tell you where it will not be, and that is Spotify.”
  
  In a statement provided to Variety on Thursday, a Spotify rep said, “It was our desire to keep Joe Budden on Spotify. As Joe referenced on his show, we made him a considerable offer — one that was significantly larger and many times the value of the existing agreement and reflective of the current market and size of his audience. Unfortunately, we could not come to terms and we respect his wishes to find a new home for his show.”
  
  On his podcast Wednesday, Budden described Spotify’s offer as a “bum-ass deal” that he could not in good conscience co-sign.
  
  The “Love & Hip-Hop” alumnus and host of Revolt’s “State of the Culture” is also a former rapper whose twice-weekly podcast has rated as the No. 1 podcast on Spotify in the past. (It’s currently No. 15 on Spotify’s podcast charts, according to the app.) In recent weeks, Budden has been telling listeners about his unhappiness with the current arrangement, before he announced Wednesday that he’s planning to take the show elsewhere.
  
  “Spotify never cared about this podcast individually,” Budden said in the podcast. “Spotify only cared about our contribution to the platform.” Budden added that his talk show has been “undermined and undervalued,” pointing to a recent deal with Bill Simmons’ The Ringer for $250 million which, he said, was “actively pitting [these signings] against us.” (Spotify has disclosed that it will pay up to about $196 million for The Ringer.)
  
  Budden accused Spotify “pillaging” his audience as a way to build up its broader podcast strategy. “You pillage the audience from the podcast, and you’ve continued to pillage each step of the way without any regard” for the listeners, he said. In addition, Budden compared Spotify’s podcast business to his experience in the music business — where he said artists are typically exploited financially. He also mentioned by name Spotify executives who are no longer with the company, but were instrumental in bringing him to the streaming platform, chief among them: Tuma Basa, who curated Spotify’s popular Rap Caviar playlist and is now an executive at YouTube Music.
  
  “We can’t really talk about no business between us before I know what took place with my brother Tuma,” said Budden. Basa left Spotify in March 2018, prior to Budden’s podcast becoming exclusive to Spotify.
  
  Budden, called “the Howard Stern of hip-hop” by the New York Times, first launched his podcast in early 2015. He brought it exclusively to Spotify under a deal in August 2018 (while the show also is distributed on YouTube). “The Joe Budden Podcast with Rory and Mal” is hosted by Budden, alongside his friends Jamil “Mal” Clay and Rory Farrell. The show focuses on hip-hop news, events and culture but the discussion spans a wide range of other topics including sports, entertainment and their own lives.
  
  At this point, Budden might decide to take his podcast non-exclusive to multiple audio platforms or seek to secure an exclusive pact with a different podcasting network. At the heart of the matter, said Budden, is “wage disparity.”
  
  Still, Budden added: “I don’t wanna come off as angry, upset or bitter because the reality of it is we both hit our goals.”
