This is simply outrageous! #Muslims are under attack again in #SriLanka as Dankotuwa Public Market is banned for #Muslim traders by the local government body.
"Internet freedom is in decline around the world, and being part of a force for good that allows people to have private access to the open Web is hugely important to me. Millions of people around the world rely on Tor Browser and onion services for private and secure communication in their day-to-day lives." - Steph, communications director of the Tor Project https://internethealthreport.org/2019/in-defense-of-anonymity/
We live in a world where stealing our attention is the most profitable business. Yet, knowledge work demands long periods of focused attention to get anything worthwhile done. We must constantly fight to protect our attention from the myriad of digital and physical distractions. Constant distraction is our default state now unless we take active steps to create focus.
Oh well, their claims for being "free" and "open" are equally bogus and false : "Telegram has an open API and protocol free for everyone." "Telegram is free forever. No ads. No subscription fees." : https://telegram.org/
I never had a chance to take a closer look at it until now. Should advice against using it in an environment like ours where popular platforms are likely to get censored / blocked.
Social media, including WhatsApp are blocked in Sri Lanka at the moment. My friends and colleagues are looking for alternative platforms to communicate. I've been able to get some of them on #Matrix and XMPP. #Telegram seems to have gained some popularity in this context. Telegram claims to be a "distributed" platform because their "servers are spread worldwide for security and speed".
Well, if that qualifies as "distributed", then Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter too are distributed. Am I wrong?
One thing is certain in the middle of the confusion caused by #srilankablasts : All factions of the ruling elite will unanimously agree upon imposing censorship, suppressing democratic rights and introducing draconian "counter terrorism" laws.
