I know there are quite some #mastoadmin struggling with the disk space usage of the mastodon instance they maintain. The issue is not acknowledged enough and there are very few ways you can mitigate this using the official mastodon tools etc. Even better, often the proposed 'solution' is to 'get more disk space lol'.

Here's a compilation of recipes on how we try to deal with this for post.lurk.org as we learn by doing.

In general we document many parts of lurk.org on that wiki so that other collectives can use that information:

Recording of Conversations developer Daniel Gultsch on the state of the #xmpp community in 2019 at #froscon

    https://media.ccc.de/v/froscon2019-2448-the_state_of_the_xmpp_community

    Some takeaways:

    1) there is a growing network of people working on a #public federated chat network based on XMPP. There has been a lot of activity in the space in recent years. This activity is partly due to the development sprints, many of which last year have been organized by @pep

    2) a bunch of new (and existing) clients continue working on usability (cross platform, consistent UIs, support for mobile, end-to-end encryption). Particularly web clients such as ConverseJS by @jcbrand are promising.

    3) A directory to search public discussion channels exists: https://search.jabbercat.org/rooms/1

    4) Ongoing experimentation with what can be built on top of XMPP as a federated protocol by for example @Goffi

    5) Conversations for Android has secured funding to implement a Voice / Video calls!

On the 30th of january the #XMPP community is organizing a development sprint focused on #UX and #UI in the XMPP ecosystem.

XMPP is a long standing protocol for federated chat which in recent years underwent impressive technical modernization that brought the ecosystem modern mobile clients, cross device chat and end-to-end encryption based on Signal.

The XMPP community organizes so-called sprints where developers gather from across Europe to work on the ecosystem.

Even though the ecosystem saw many improvements in recent years, the UX across the ecosystem still leaves a lot to be desired. To begin addressing this, the next XMPP Sprint will be focused on UX and UI, particularly in regards to naming conventions.

That is why we’d like to invite members of the open source design community to join us on the 30th of January in the offices of Open Source Publishing[1]. On february the 1st we will also do a smaller meetup in the margins of FOSDEM.

If you already have an account on the XMPP network, join us in our Sprint chatroom:
    xmpp:xmpp-sprint@chat.cluxia.eu?join

If you don’t, the room is also accessible without an account via:
    https://chat.cluxia.eu/anon/#xmpp-sprint

while trying to reverse engineer #activitypub implementations in order to learn about the protocol during tonight's homebrewserver.club meeting we discovered @puckipedia whose website just with responds bare JSON-LD objects. It is like an interactive tutorial to AP. At this point in time it actually the only hands-on place to learn how AP works without having to wrap one's head around the spec πŸ‘πŸΏ .

Spain court confirms jail sentence for former IMF chief Rato

All possibilities of appeal are exhausted, one of the most high-profile bankers of Spain needs to go to jail now. This makes Spain only the second country (after Iceland) where any prominent banker were sent to jail following the 2008 financial crisis. What this article fails to mention, like all others I found, is that the trial and conviction was due to an unprecedented citzien's campaign (led by people such as Simona
Levi), which raised funds, hired lawyers and organized leaks to gather evidence. More on this aspect in an (older) article in The Nation.

"Lately, a wave of yellow bikes from China has been crashing over the cities of this planet, bringing shitty steel constructions into every corner of the world. But what do these bikes do? Are they here to improve the mobility of urban populations or to track their every move? Will they be used for a long time and regularly repaired, or will they be thrown away once they start crumbling? Do we actually need privatized bike-sharing in our cities?

As reports are starting to pile up, that oBike – one of these bike-sharing startups – is shutting down (and taking millions in deposits paid by their users with them), it is important to think about a new way to use these bikes.

LibreBike is here exactly for this reason – to change the whole thinking behind bike-sharing. What if you wouldn't have to pay for the bikes? What if bikes where simply public goods, to be used by everyone? Turns out, in just five easy steps, every oBike can be made into a LibreBike – a bike for everyone!"

@320x200 @xuv @rigelk what irks me at the moment is the requirement to make an account for every service. Imo we should be able to get much more integration (and migration?) out of these things. Im wondering why @pixelfed for example isn't just a client for mastodon. But these are also ongoing processes I guess.

Later this week I'll be participating in the #2018 #Libre #Graphics #Meeting. I'll be presenting some recent experiences teaching #floss in #graphic #design education: https://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2018/program/

Anyone else in the #fediverse going there? Should we do a #mastodon #meetup in the margins of the conference?
