"It’s strange, isn’t it? The ideology of capitalism is that it is a system that generates immense abundance (so much stuff!). But in reality it is a system that relies on the constant production of scarcity.

This conundrum was first noticed back in 1804, and became known as the Lauderdale Paradox. Lauderdale pointed out that the only way to increase “private riches” (basically, GDP) was to reduce what he called “public wealth”, or the commons. To enclose things that were once free so that people have to pay in order to access them. To illustrate, he noted that colonialists would often even burn down trees that produced nuts and fruits so that local inhabitants wouldn’t be able to live off of the natural abundance of the earth, but would be forced to work for wages in order to feed themselves. User: Capitalism must fall sooner rather than later, or else it will take our planet with it. We must dispose of the Capitalist pigs now. No cops, no borders, no landlords. The time for revolution is coming. This vegan curry I just made is delicious.

You don't have to be a cooperative member or a user on our Mastodon instance to use it. At this point all that we would ask is that you keep your posts in line with our values: https://wiki.sunbeam.city/doku.php?id=values_and_mission_statement

I don't have any faith in the state and I think that the welfare state is a temporary, half-satisfying solution at the best of times, but we need to grow our stateless networks of support and infrastructure to the point where we can provide a viable alternative - and we are not there yet.

The only other 'viable' alternative to Social Democratic Capitalism at this time is Neo-Liberalism.

So let's mitigate the potential harm of Capitalism while growing our alterantives: it's called "dual power."

    In summary:
    - Exxon Mobile knew since at least the 70s about the potential harm caused by global warming and greenhouse gas emissions.

    - In the 80s, they concluded that global warming would actually be good for profits; the polar ice caps would melt, making it easier to get at Arctic oil reserves.

    - They started to collaborate with other fossil fuel companies to knowingly lie about CO2 emissions and its effects, in order to stop any global coordinated efforts to to prevent climate change.

    I am so fucking angry.

Oil companies, for decades, have been DELIBERATELY ACCELERATING global warming in order to MELT THE FUCKING MELT THE POLAR ICE CAPS so they can extract oil from the Arctic more easily!

Asking someone a question is completely different from looking the answer up. Humans are able to contextualise questions, highlight the important bits and add any info from personal experience, as well as tailor the answer to the the asker and their situation. This can't be done with static information. Saying "just google it/lmgtfy/google is free sweaty" is not a valid or clever answer.

Having access to near limitless information is not the same as being part of a network of knowledge.

"The laws were a civil rather than a criminal code, concerned with the payment of compensation for harm done and the regulation of property, inheritance and contracts; the concept of state-administered punishment for crime was foreign to Ireland's early jurists."
