if you wanna help write up the first draft of the #Solarpunk Coop's constitution (or are just curious) then hop on #sunbeam-city on freenode irc (chat.freenode.net)
I'm facing the threat of homelessness as my dad got fired for clocking in drunk. I work and have been saving up to move out (he's homophobic/transphobic) but I only started working full time recently; I graduated from uni this Tuesday. I've found an affordable place that will take me in, but I need to pay off a deposit + rent beforehand, and I'm £262.50 short.
I have no financial support and nowhere to go so any amount would be appreciated:
i don't think enough people realise that the reason currency came into existence and its primary function today isn't for the easy exchange of goods but rather for the accumulation of wealth beyond what can be justified as personal use
The reason mechanical keyboards are so expensive is almost entirely because of commodity fetishism and nerd points. There is no reason to justify charging (and buying) keyboards at hundreds of dollars just because the switch underneath is slightly different. There is no better testament to the fact that geeks and their money are easily parted than mechanical keyboards.
I know there's a lot of negativity right now about the Fediverse but I just want to say how much I appreciate that people here actually seem to talk about things that interest them and have genuine conversations and let themselves be vulnerable rather than trying to make every toot some kind of carefully engineered witticism or snarky comeback for popularity points
It's like a breath of fresh air to have a public forum where you can actually just, like, talk??
tech bros on twitter arguing against libraries in favour of "spotify for books" because authors/publishers (or rather VC investors) can't use libraries as their primary source of profit is just a perfect example of silicon valley's willful ignorance or complete contempt for the ideas of public service and the commons.
rather than everybody creating a public space and sharing resources they'd have us all completely separated and paying countless times over for the same thing.
"By late next year, #bitcoin could be consuming more electricity than all the world’s solar panels currently produce — about 1.8 percent of global electricity, according to a simple extrapolation of the study’s predictions. That would effectively erase decades of progress on renewable energy."
..amongst other things. Registration is open and I would love for you to join! Although I don't plan on the server growing very much, I think it will provide a much-needed niche for the Fediverse. Feedback is welcome.
PS I'll still be active on the other instances I frequent.
