@brion have you thought about offering them to the PostmarketOS team as testing models?

@muzkore @aral do average people understand yet why Exxon or Philip Morris are so harmful? If so, how did that come about? What can the digital commons movements learn from social movements campaigning on the environmental and public health?

@muzkore I'm using pinafore.social as an "app". I put a link icon on the home screen of my Android/Linux device and it opens using the browser. I love it!

@muzkore @alcinnz I haven't used or trusted vanilla Ubuntu since the Amazon Lens debacle. But yes, the #ubPorts project looks good, as does #PostmarketOS, and I presume that both of these, as well as the #Purism #PureOS (#FSF endorsed), build on work done for Ubuntu Touch.

@Wolf480pl so I installed one of the two SuperUser in F-Droid. It keeps telling me my su binary is out of date but gives me no indication of what I'm supposed to do about that or how. On double checking it seems the Kingoroot app is also called Super User. Now I'm confused. Time to sleep ;-)

@Stever @wakest why do you think distributed is superior to federated? Also, have you looked into other distributed messaging systems like BitMessage and Scuttlebutt?

@alcinnz the Open Handset Alliance was set up so a consortium of hardware companies could compete with Apple's first-mover advantage with the iThings. You have to admit that for all it's flaws, Android is a much more open system than those. Maybe now we need a Libre Handset Foundation, made up of companies like Purism and Technoethical?

@alcinnz that's a classic false dichotomy. Compulsory and free (as-in-beer) or voluntary but expensive. I imagine MS making similar arguments about IE. It didn't wash then ..

@Wolf480pl Superuser? Is that the free code equivalent of Power User? I wonder if it's compatible with Android 4.2.2?

@Wolf480pl maybe. It was a long time ago so I can't remember the details, but I thought it was a US case against Microsoft. Anyone know for sure?

@rbe_expert @Adoxographer Also, one of the key tenets of 'leave it to the market' ideology is that people should always pursue narrow self-interest ie buy cheap stuff not ethical stuff. So supporting ethical business *is* anti-capitalism (if by "capitalism" you mean what Marx and Proudhon meant - a neo-fuedal system by which an idle elite use property to extract unearned rents from the productive majority)

@rbe_expert @Adoxographer exactly. FWIW the idea that it's not possible to do anything ethical until "capitalism" is overthrown is self-contradictory. By this logic, since overthrowing "capitalism" would be ethical, it's not possible to do it until it's already happened. Classic #Catch22

You know that feeling you had last time you had a big spring clean and got rid of a whole lot of dusty old crap you never use? That's me banishing all the proprietary gOgle apps from my mobile now that I have root :-D

#IANAL so is there anyone out there who is a software-freedom-friendly lawyer, who can give this some thought, and if it's got legs, let the rest of us know how we can help?

It seems crazy that I have to go to such lengths to get admin rights on a device I own, and uninstall bundled apps I don't want. I seem to remember an anti-trust law suite that successfully forced #Microsoft to stop bundling Internet Exploiter with Windows in a way that made it hard to remove or disable. Could we use that precedent to liberate #Android from compulsory #GoogleApps?

#Kingoroot worked! I now have root on my Vodafone 785 mobile device. I successfully used Yalp to demote #GMail to a normal app, and then used Settings>Applications to uninstall it. The only downside is Kingoroot installed a #PowerUser app to manage root permissions etc, which I assume is proprietary.

@falgn0n you're right that the #UX of Yalp could be improved on though. A way to navigate between the major sections of the UI for example. I often end up stuck in the updates screen or a search results screen with no way to get back to the home screen. Infuriating.
