It seems to me that #NZ has struggled to adequately fund public broadcasting since the TV license fee was abolished in 1999. Back then, kiwis were starting to access publicly funded content via the net, and this has only increased over the last 20 years, so keeping the license fee wouldn't have solved the funding problem. But what about a similar fee on internet connections, collected by ISPs?

If kiwis vote "no" in the #referendum next year, that won't make cannabis disappear from the country overnight. It's a vote against quality-controlled cannabis being sold to adults, by licensed, tax-paying retailers. So in effect, it's a vote *for* unregulated cannabis (or analogues) being sold to anyone with money, by totally unregulated black market dealers who pay no tax on it, not even the income tax and GST people selling groceries have to pay. Who would vote for that?

I didn't even notice the first time around that they did the same to Kes, half way through season 3. Replacing her short helmet hairdo with long, curly locks, and her modest costumes with a body stocking not unlike Seven's costume.

Parents of babies killed by nurses’ error urge Samoans to get immunised
      from RNZ
Five more babies in Samoa have died after contracting measles, bringing the nation's death toll from the measles epidemic to 60. While the country's immunisation rates have never been high, a reluctance to get vaccinated has been blamed on an incident in 2018 when two babies died after they were administered botched MMR vaccines. Two nurses pleaded guilty to negligence causing manslaughter after one mixed the MMR vaccine with expired muscle relaxant anaesthetic instead of water. The concoction stopped the babies' hearts within minutes. Both nurses were jailed this year for five years. The two sets of parents are now suing Samoa's Ministry of Health. One family is demanding 10 million tala in compensation, that is just under NZ$6 million. They talk to Alex Perrottet and Logan Church.

However, we also need to learn from the experience of the Mesa Verde peoples. Isolated self-sufficiency isn't a resilient strategy either. Being independent of the grid doesn't require being completely #OffGrid, and there are benefits to being connected to the grid even when you don't (usually) need it. It may be that a combination of both autonomous and cooperative systems allows human societies to function at our most adaptable.

We need to start thinking of large-scale electric and data grids as a supplement to autonomous local systems, not as essential core infrastructure. If we reduce our dependence on them, that reduces the strain on them and the people who maintain them, as well as reducing the impact it would have on our lives if and when they become less reliable.
