@cassandra well the simple answer is evolutionary and that is how we learn - monkey see monkey do.

So if you see someone who is similar to you - then you know that what they did is also possible for you. Not everyone can abstract that to just the human form. Plus there has been quiet a bit of oppression in the relatively recent past.
