TL;DR NPM fired folks for trying to improve working conditions and talking about unionizing. Blatantly illegally. Union busting companies don't usually settle with the employees. That tells me this was egregious.

This made me think about one of the reasons I like @mwlucas tech books: He doesn't gloss over the warts and bad decisions. Even when he *loves* software, he is honest about the bad parts. He points out the spike traps along the path.

Meanwhile, the main pusher of this "technology" is Google, whose new version of Gmail takes several seconds to get beyond a loading screen.

Sysadmins often like to take pride in how much they get done and how overworked they are. How that is "just how things are".

It's dangerous thinking. It normalizes being given too much work.

It leads to burnout. You won't generally realize you are burning out until you are well in the hole.

I saw boosted onto my timeline a slashdot story being hysterical about "Google adding DRM" to android apps.

First, that's misleading. They are adding digital signatures to them. You know, to help prevent tampering with the files you are installing. Sort of DRM, but I don't see them panicking about Debian using signed .deb files.

Second, the link wasn't to slashdot. It was to federati.net. We're used to mastodon not tracking us. But apparently some GNU Social instances do. 😠
