(I mean, I don't want capitalism at all, but you can pick and choose your corps sometimes to get what you need because they have more reliable philosophies or operating habits.)

My main issue with Telegram's ICO plans are this:

1. Unless it's in a stable and reliable way to some degree (ie. I pay Apple for a phone, they give me a phone and services without privacy-degrading bullshit attached), I don't want capitalism in my digital shit, especially anything social. That's a whole load of badness waiting to happen. One of the reasons Mastodon is so great is that nobody is trying to turn a profit.

2. fuck cryptocurrency

From something various people have been saying (just reiterating as an semi-admin/mod/ambassador/janitor), I really would recommend that if you want to get someone into Mastodon, recommend them a particular instance - somewhere that you know of that you think they would be into. It doesn't necessarily mean that will be the instance you're on. E:

Long story short; my abusive mother is trying to throw me and my enbyfriend out. It’s probably going to happen soon. We’re both disabled, my enbyfriend is an EU citizen and we have no real income so we don’t have concrete entitlements or access to housing.

I think it will be interesting to see where Mastodon goes in the coming year. As other people have noted, it feels like we have something pretty special.

I look upon all the good people and places I know here as a sort of family, and with a feeling of a kind of shared pride in what we have created and are continuing to create, and all of the experiences we have shared so far, and the ways that we support and strengthen each other.
