    @dansup @bob On the other hand, though, Pixelfed is not like other fediverse platforms. It's supposed to be an federated, open-source alternative to Instagram, and one of Instagram's selling points is that it's a great platform for creating brands and communities.

    Instagram is home to many communities of artists like #pickupjazz which promote and collaborate with each other. For me Instagram is a great place to discover and follow indie creators. PixelFed could be that.

    @jz a lot of popular support for Signal comes from the fact that Edward Snowden endorses it. That's how I first heard of it and came to trust it.

    Lesson learned: don't take the word of celebrity infosec people as canon.
