I'm continuing to enjoy Better Call Saul. They do a really good job of giving a sense of suspense and dread even though we know more or less how this all turns out. We know what happens to Jimmy, to Mike, to Gus Fring -- everybody in Breaking Bad. The one thing for me that really looms ominously over it all is, what about Kim? When we meet "Saul" in BB there's no trace of her. This isn't the kind of show that has happy endings.
It seems to be a tradition in Star Trek that all the protagonist captains get promoted to Admiral once their series are cancelled. That seems like a fitting reward, except that every admiral that appears on screen in their various series is portrayed as either a useless twat or a villain to some degree.
With yesterday's acquisition of Black Poplar (C. aegerita) and Pink Oyster (P. djamor), I'm now up to 17 mushroom cultures in my library. About a third were purchased as liquid cultures, another third from internet trades, and the final third from mushrooms I took tissue samples from myself. Most of these have been fairly recent though, and I've only grown 5 of them to fruition, waiting for the weather to improve for outdoor grows. I have a lot of work ahead of me.
I just got some mushroom cultures sent to me in a trade with a fellow redditor. Several things are odd:
1. it took almost 2 weeks to arrive
2. there's no postmark stamp
3. the barcode is printed crooked on a sticker instead of printed on the envelope
4. the sides of the envelope had clear tape on them
The contents seemed fine, but the rest of it seems off to me. IDK.
I've seen a number of memes to the effect of "cop have plenty of riot gear but medical workers need to wear trash bags". The politics of this aside, I can't help but wonder if it's a fair comparison. One of the problems with keeping adequate supplies of medical PPE is that they need to be discarded frequently, no? It's not like cops incinerate their gear several times per shift and put on brand new stuff.
I laid my King Stropharia (S. rugosoannulata AKA "wine cap") bed this afternoon. 160lbs of sawdust pellets, a bunch of fallen oak branches, a wheelbarrow of woodchips, and a 5 gallon bucket of spawn. It's still a little earlier than I'd like in terms of overnight low temps (it snowed yesterday) but I'm sure they'll survive. Plus, and early start increases the chances of getting a harvest this year. I did it now because the bucket of wood chips I was inoculating started growing trichoderma and I didn't want it in the house any longer.
I've been toying with the idea of starting a business selling mushroom cultures. If I do, my existing DIY single jar stir plate isn't going to cut it, so I put together a quad plate. Now I can do 5 at a time.
