I got First Martians for my birthday. It's made by a Polish company called Portal Games. In it, you play one of the astronauts on the first manned mission to Mars. Unsurprisingly for an indie game, it has super complex rules and approximately 5 billion different tiles and card decks. Uniquely, however, it uses a companion app which acts as the mission computer, which is a pretty cool idea. I was surprised to find that you don't need to create an account with the game company to use it, which is quite refreshing. Hopefully it's fun and the hybrid format works well.

My shiitake culture should be arriving in a couple of days, so I got a few growing bags made up and ready for pressure cooking. I mixed 1L of maple wood pellets with 1.5L of water and 500mL of used coffee grounds, then put it into two vacuum sealer bags with DIY Tyvek air filters. Adding water to the pellets is amazing. They immediately begin to swell and rise like dough, then crumble into sawdust at a touch. I'm not following any tried and true method here, I'm just going to see how it goes.

I ordered a syringe of snow cap shiitake liquid culture. I plan to dry/powder them to use as a seasoning and broth base. I'm still struggling to get my own portabella/crimini culture started, so this can keep me busy in the meantime.

I started watching The Innocents on Netflix. From what I can gather, it's about shape-shifters, which might be kind of a tired premise, but they apparently can only change shape into this one Norwegian dude. That guy also happens to be a real person who falls into some kind of coma/seizure whenever they transform into him. For what purpose, I have no idea. It's certainly an inventive twist on the genre.
