Trump didn't use campaign funds, but it also set the precedence for Trump on campaign violations. Edwards argued that he did it to save his wife from embarrassment and Trump can make the exact same defense. I don't thing a same judge would even bother trying the case, which is why it made no sense for Cohen to agree to plead guilty.

Remember that time when presidential candidate John Edwards paid his mistress $900,000 DIRECTLY from campaign funds to hid his affair?

He was acquitted of campaign finance violations.
