I want to live somewhere with a view. It hardly matters what the view is, so long as you can see far. I like to see far. If I drove a car, I wouldn't mind living on a hill. Every time I walk past those luxury apartments on Aker Brygge in Oslo, I'm a bit envious, because the view from them must be amazing.

@biot Granted, many of the parts you find on eBay and Alibaba are grey market parts, in the sense that they're not meant to be available for random individuals to purchase, but are leaking off the factory lines in Shenzhen and out into the market booths and onto the Internet. One of the chips I'm using is a volume controller also used in audio interfaces from M-Audio, and I reckon if I was a large manufacturer like that, I'd be able to contact the Chinese engineers to ask questions.

@biot One of the datasheets I'm using was sitting in some Chinese person's Documents and Settings folder that had somehow ended up on a website. Evidently, nothing had been officially published, but documentation had seeped out through the cracks.

@biot And what I wish I had access to from where I'm sitting is the sort of jotted-down handwritten pass-it-along information that they probably possess in Shenzhen, that they necessarily must possess in order to be able to build products using these components. Even in an environment where you can churn out prototype PCBs extremely cheaply and quickly, it's useful to avoid mistakes in the first place.

Another strongly underrated recipe for success is teamwork. Sometimes, a power duo or trio can produce better work than one mastermind, and if you remove one person from the group, the magic is gone.

Some creatives don't really have a signature style because they can do a whole range of styles.

Listen to pop producer Max Martin's 1990s output and tell me what it has in common with his 2010s output. Not much, other than being pop music, if you ask me.

People often get famous for having signature styles, but there are also very successful people you never hear about because their output adapts to the situation.

It's ironic that I live in a country known for blondes, yet I prefer brunettes. Brunettes are just better. Fake blonde hair is basically like a reduction of beauty to me, and the result is rarely very convincing.

People always remark on how beautiful Scandinavian women are. There are a few, but it's not like the country is littered in them. However, perhaps it is fair to say that beautiful Scandinavian women are more beautiful than the beautiful women of other countries. I mean, I can kind of agree with that...

@biot Also, you sound like you think I view this as deliberate or malicious behaviour, and that's not the point. My assumption is that Chinese component manufacturers don't have a culture for writing good documentation. I think many of them don't hire technical writers and draftsmen, because they have more improvised ways of exchanging information.

@biot With components from companies like Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, Linear Technology or Microchip, you don't even need to ask on a forum. The datasheets will contain the information you need, in the expository text and the numerous application circuit diagrams. If there are Chinese forums out there where you can learn the details, they most certainly don't turn up on Google when you search for the part numbers.

@biot Who's talking about source code? Who's talking about the language barrier? If the language was the problem, Chinese datasheets would be full of Chinese text. The problem is that most of them contain very little text. If there's an application circuit, there is no expository text. What is the impedance on this input? Who knows? You're left guessing, which is impractical if you're trying to prototype a circuit with a part you don't have yet.
