I *could* also use PCB mounted 3.5 mm jacks that point straight up, but this would require the final device to have a total of 3 PCBs (front board, main board and rear board), together with 8 standoffs, screws and nuts, 4 IDC connectors and 2 ribbon cables. I mean, it would certainly be neat in terms of being more or less as advanced as an electronics product straight off a production line.
Damn. I won't be able to fit all these PJ325 female 3.5 mm connectors into the case I bought; not if they're sitting in a row anyway. What I need is those vertically stacked 3.5 mm jacks they use on motherboards, but I don't know what they're called.
The Confederacy never really ended in North America. It merely transformed into a grassroots movement. It's an incredibly persistent subculture that refuses to die. It's not undead, but very much alive, and being encouraged by Donald Trump. From a Norwegian perspective, Trump seemed nutty but not dangerous, but once you add a large white supremacist subculture to the mix, what he's doing is actually incredibly dangerous and irresponsible.
With this synagogue shooting, we've entered much darker territory. We are no longer talking an attempt to frighten people, but murder, and at that point, such a theory as the one I posited earlier is even less likely than it was to begin with. My claim was never that the pipe-bomb-to-make-Trump-look-bad theory was the most likely one. Again, I only posited it as an "alternative B" sort of thing. It's increasingly looking like conventional American racist wingnut violence to me.

I tooted earlier about the possibility that the pipe bombs could've been a ploy to make Trump look bad. Just saw a correspondent BBC World News remark that this theory has been flouted widely on American right wing radio. I just want to say that I did not intend to take the side of the American right wing when I mentioned it. I was merely positing an alternative theory to the immediately obvious one, which I didn't bother to mention, since it was so obvious.
@Hanfyren Perhaps I should have said "popular misconception". It's the sort of simplified explanation that you often see in pop science texts. I've even seen the claim for 18 FPS, because that's the speed that was used in early silent films. (These films are often played back in 24 FPS projectors, making them look somewhat comical, a.k.a. the Charlie Chaplin effect.)
@Hanfyren I've seen several texts that predate modern video games claim "the eye can't see more than 24 frames per second" as the explanation for why movies look smooth in the theatre. The truth is that it depends on how bright the image is. Persistence of vision is greater in dim light conditions. However, even in the movie theatre, a double shutter is used to produce a 48 Hz strobe, and that, plus low light, is the real secret behind why movies don't jitter on a cinema screen.
I'm beginning to think that the secret to surviving as a hacker in 2018 might just be to start cranking out things you can exhibit in an art gallery or museum. Weird-ass circuit designs that make profound statements about the human condition, or contradict themselves, or seem impossible...
A friend of mine tracked down a copy of this old RnB loop I recorded. I play guitar and bass by hand in this one, and drums are hand-played MIDI (no sequencing) as usual. It's funky...
The inconvenient thing about having the hots for someone is that they are 99% likely to have the hots for someone else and totally aren't into your type. Too much emotion and gnashing of teeth for me. I'm just gonna wait for something to happen...
