Earth Strike is the only one I've seen that's actually formed committees and gathered organizers and planned rallies, instead of just posting on twitter "hey guys we're having a strike in 2 weeks, tell your friends!"

It's not that simple, guys. 20 disorganized strikes of 100 people each won't do anything but get a lot of people fired. Don't split the energy

The fact that there's a new #GeneralStrike proposed almost every month does, on one hand, make me hopeful. It tells me the tides of history are turning and that we're all genuinely ready for something like that to happen

But on the other hand, this isn't like any other protest guys. A general strike is a revolutionary act, we can't just do one at the drop of a hat. Please, stop dividing people between 10 different options and give your support to the most organized and popular one: #EarthStrike

I'm really surprised that there apparently isn't a "not made with prison labor" symbol for products, verified by a third-party group similar to the Non-GMO Project or the Vegan Society

When Americans buy products that say "Made in the USA" they expect the money to go into supporting local, well-paying jobs, not fueling private prisons who utilize slave labor. This is the desire regardless of political alignment. People need the ability to make an informed decision

Can I try to start a thing? Y'all mind if I start a thing real quick?

The thing will be called #DeFeduary. The idea is, within the next month, we're all going to convince our instance admins to defederate from mastodon.social. Failing that, we'll just do it as individuals

Eugen's gotten his three strikes, let's take this platform for ourselves. If you still have friends or favored follows on m.s, stop just subtooting - send them a DM telling them to leave or get left, because we're doing this together

    Boosts very appreciated!

Godddd stop spreading the propaganda that entry-level retail workers are punished for other people's shoplifting. They aren't! I've worked retail for 4 years at 5 different places (Walgreens, Target - at 2 locations, Sam's, and 2 local places) and have never heard of this happening. Shrinkage is considered part of expenses, entry-level employees aren't expected to stop shoplifting (and are more often explicitly told not to), and this is definitely against company policy at any big chain

I'm sure it does happen under the table or at small businesses, but people talk about it like it's guaranteed every time you nick a drink. It's fucking not, and by saying this every single time someone talks about theft you're doing exactly what the capitalists - including the ones who enact this policy - want. They're holding workers hostage and you're giving in to their demands

    Boosts appreciated

There's an open-source youtube client on F-Droid called SkyTube, which not only lets you watch videos without google's proprietary software on your phone, but can subscribe to channels, create playlists, and block recommendations without using a google account - or any kind of login at all. It's all stored on your device, keeping you anonymous - which is rad as hell. PLUS it blocks ads!

You can import your subscriptions from your youtube account too. If you watch a lot of vids on your phone I definitely recommend this

Hey how come any asshole will tell you that pirating music is OK since almost all of the money goes to executives rather than the people who actually produced any of the value yet fail to recognize that that’s true of virtually everything under late-stage capitalism

Pirate music, and steal everything else too

One of the most absurd things about capitalism is how it effectively puts "we could've automated the process of creating this with no detectable loss of quality, but we made workers do it instead!" on products as like a sign of quality, and people eat it up

I'll consider the #fediverse a success when corporate social media sites start adding ActivityPub support to allow following/sharing from other networks, in order to stay relevant

"Kindness is the most punk thing there is" is a sentiment I strongly either agree or disagree with depending on its use

"Our resistance should be based on compassionately providing aid to others" πŸ‘

PSA: If you're a #maker, please, if you can, design your stuff in the #openstructures grid! Modularity makes things so so much more sustainable, by making them easy to repair, customize, repurpose, and reuse - but the benefits only come with widespread adoption

Please boost this if you support sustainable inventing!

    someone: "what's solarpunk?"
me: Solarpunks believe that a better world is possible πŸ˜‰ and we can build it in the shell of the old πŸ˜‰ using direct action πŸ˜‰ and mutual aid πŸ˜‰. We believe in producing for people, not profits πŸ˜‰ in decentralized πŸ˜‰ cooperative workplaces πŸ˜‰ and replacing oppressive power structures πŸ˜‰ with community-level πŸ˜‰ direct democracy πŸ˜‰

Is there any good #modular, #sustainable, #opensource, #repairable, or otherwise just good #smartphone - kind of like #fairphone - that I can get in so-called America? I'm really struggling to find anything. Just a rec for a good alternative to Samsung and Apple would be a start!
