The Princess Switch and The Princess Switch: Switched Again are not High Culture scriptwriting, but honestly the acting and in particular the accents and voices by Vanessa Hudgens are top notch. -

Before any English people jump in to talk about Liverpool accent and Essex accent and whatever, when we foreigners say English accent we mean slightly posher BBC English. -

> My current cybersecurity course reverses those definitions. Deep web = authorization required such as intranets; dark web = special tools, software, techniques required, such as Tor or I2P.
@LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} Not really reverses, more like shifts them.I know how people feel about "dark web" now, but from how I remember it, it was like this:
Originally "deep web" was similar to "deep links", referring to things that are not on the front page and in the case of the deep web not indexed.
The dark web was not out in the light, not visible, so intranet portals and other things that require authorization. Tor and stuff wasn't really prominent in the discourse at this point, but would have been included in stuff not ordinarily reachable.
Later the connotation of dark as something sinister narrowed the dark web to scary overlay networks where places like Silk Road exist. This left a gap for what to call the walled-off web, so the deep web term shifted to cover this gap. I would say the transition happened over time about 2010β2015, but it also differs depending on whether you look at popular media, or web and security professionals, where popular media would have shifted first.

Sometimes you see a comment by a person and you feel like wow, this seems like a person I don't want to interact with in my short time on Earth.
But then you feel like hey, maybe I'm overreacting and it was just poor word choice, maybe it's just context collapse and they're coming from a good place.
So you go to their profile page to see what else they've said and NOOOOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE, yeah, I have nothing to learn from this person, they're self-declared poison with no interest in understanding anyone.

@realcaseyrollins βοΈ I haven't heard the definitions for years, but I thought the deep web is the anonymous access but unindexed web and the dark web is the authorization required web? -

@Steven Roose @MarkusL Oh right, that's a word too. In Swedish I would say an "egoist" is one who ruthlessly puts themself first to the detriment of everyone else, and an "egocentriker" is mostly someone who is lacking in empathy and talks about themself all the time.
In English it seems that "egotist" has an overlap with the latter, but "egoist" doesn't.

A person said something along the lines of egoism being destructive.
An obnoxious commenter replied "look up definition of egoism vs. egotism", so I did.
I thought they were synonyms, but turns out they're ... pretty much synonyms?
Can anyone help me understand what Obnoxious Commenter might have meant? Why would the meaning of "egoism" undermine the message that short-sighted selfishness is destructive? but "egotism" would make it work?
