Just heard about journals outsourcing the storage of a paper's supplementary materials to a 3rd party company that also charges for it
What exactly are journals paid to do again?
Key red flags of a tech bro:
- Use of the word "Disruption."
- An inordinate amount of time talking about "free speech."
- A disdain or ambivalence towards the idea of ethics in technology and engineering.
- A refusal to look at consequences beyond how something works.
- Strong capitalist tendencies.
- A belief in "neutrality" or "apolitical-ness" in software development.
- Anti-democratic stances, such as "benevolent" dictatorships.
- Fedoras.
This AI will do its best to turn any picture into a recipe.

@Laurelai And what? Ratings?
They have Panto and Silas kiss on screen and even give them a happy ending
That's like 60% of what I want from gay representation (it's a low bar, I know)
@Laurelai Yeah, it's not like there isn't a whole lot of other people who could take that job and probably do it better
@Laurelai Oh is that why it was cancelled?
@Laurelai Ugh fuck that guy
@Laurelai No clue who that is
@Laurelai Aw dang
I'm still low-key sad that they cancelled Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
That was a great show
@drifting_in_circles @red Same. We explained trans-ness to our kids and plenty of other things to our kids. They're mostly like, "Oh. OK." Kids already don't understand a lot about their worlds. Telling them that gender is more complicated than "boy" and "girl" isn't going to be some giant shock of something they've thought was a universal truth. They are constantly having shit they thought they understood overturned. Often without even being explicitly taught something. It's a lot of what being a kid is.
@freakazoid Ah, so that the gays can enjoy being the subject of a nice civilized debate over how much dignity we're owed, before all the straights go and vote on whether an instance with anti-queer policies gets blocked?
Headline of the day goes to:
"Young People Are Growing Horns. Phone Use Is To Blame, Research Suggests"
Automating the sharing of blocklists is great for:
π Discreetly silencing minorities
π Preventing those who have been targeted for abuse through this system from ever vindicating themselves
π Policing who can be friends with whom for petty reasons
π Abdicating responsibility for decisions that an instance admin really should have to stand behind
@JakeMonkey Ohhh ... I hope today goes better than the way it sounds like this week has been for you :/
New shirt for Pride
"... whenever a techbro talks about 'disrupting an industry,' they mean: 'replicating an already existing industry, but subsidizing it heavily with venture capital, and externalizing its costs at the expense of the public or potential workers by circumventing existing consumer-, worker- or public-protection laws in order to hopefully undercut the existing competition long enough to bring about regulatory capture.'"

Who called it "late stage capitalism," when it's obviously "workahol poisoning?"
Reminder:
Strikes and protests are inconvenient and loud and costly and a bit of an imposition on the rest of us
This is on purpose
It's *supposed* to be this way
If you are inconvenienced, it's working
Support the workers anyway
