Bridge stations explode in Star Trek, and this "design flaw" was not fixed for centuries because successive generations of 23rd-24th century weapons were explicitly designed to overcome previous generations of defensive strategies, keeping Klingon/Romulan weapons designers and Federation bridge console designers forever locked in a Red Queen-type situation
