@anarchiv @flowerenby Long story short, psychiatry's main purpose is not to heal people, but to make them 'function' within capitalist society at minimal cost. And it still sucks at that.

@anarchiv @flowerenby Also, just on the basis of character types, making doctors the authoritative carers for people with psychological issues is probably the dumbest thing I can think of. Medical school selects for people who can get good grades, not people with above-average empathy and interpersonal skills.
@anarchiv @flowerenby A catalog of psychiatry's great successes:
- icepick lobotomies
- pharmacological lobotomies
- deep breathing ("mindfulness") as a cure for psychosocial trauma
- sensory deprivation (I know a man who's mother was made psychotic by receiving this 'treatment' for postpartum depression)
- homesexuality is a disease
- isolating vulnerable people from their sources of support in the community
@anarchiv @flowerenby It's crazy because psychiatry (despite being a medical specialty) is actually really not scientific. They make diagnoses based on clusters of symptoms, not the causes of those symptoms. It's like saying that a car has 'black smoke coming out of the back problems' rather than 'it has engine trouble'.

Left-liberal economist: So, what society needs to be stable is upward mobility for the 99%. That's what's missing in all our growth. *Upward mobility*.
Me: Upward? As in, raising your relative social status? Relative to others?
Economist: Yes.
Me: For the 99%.
Economist: Yes.
Me: All of them.
Economist: Yes, we just need every member of the 99% of society to be able to constantly improve their social status relative to every other member of the 99%.
Me: How?
Economist: Cage fighting.

Why don't tech bros or other "visionaries" ever unveil the bus of the future in big events?
The bus requires virtually no additional infrastructure, can have its routes organically changed and is relatively affordable.
I am all for transportation infrastructure investment in the US in trains and light rail but the bus is a solution that can be implemented better right now.
I want to see what a future bus looks like, not what some insecure man's need to take up space and waste gas looks like.
