growing up, we used to sit in the back yard in lawn chairs and watch thunderstorms together. was sort of our thing. whenever the weather report said there was a storm incoming, we'd get our chairs out with some root beer and wait for the thunder to roll in 😁

My late father's birthday today, he would have been 56, been gone 10 years now (wow).

does their business model still require users to get locked into the platform?

opening up on some patents is a step toward trust. but it sure smells stinky.

lockin is even more important with msft's new "windows as a service" model they're working on. maybe a calculated risk to put the patents out there -- to gain trust, then once embraced, extinguish. because that is what increases shareholder value.

@Supernova I'm considering sandboxing my messenger use into "face slim". that way it keeps it tucked away and removes the claws into the device.

i'm not sure what the end solution is. i really only talk to a few people on messenger, but they talk to most others on it -- so i probably won't get them to use something respectful anytime soon.

@saxnot Brother ADS-* and Fijutsu ScanSnap machines are very good, fast, and consistent with document feeders.

Most models new are above your price point, but I bet gently used or refurb would fit. They last forever like the brother laser printers, so its not like you'd be getting it with no life remaining.
