RDF is really great because it can describe anything with a graph of triples (subject, verb, object) and every part of the graph can be drawn from different ontologies (languages or namespaces). Very flexible and powerful. Not that hard to learn.
As for venture capital money, well...I don't know if its poison but it does suggest a conflict of interest. Inrupt has been very slow to come out with a developer toolkit. Why? It may just be a miscalculation or lack of resources?
