I think a BSD should run fine on it, but mind your desktop environment usage as usually those are to blame for RAM use. Maybe something small like Fluxbox.
I've fallen in love with Cwm thanks to OpenBSD and it's available on other platforms. There's also Hikari which is based on Cwm but supports tiling.

@alberto Not sure if they'd ever be next since they have their own device with their own platform. Android runs on many devices from many manufacturers, so the issue is very similar to what Microsoft endured with Windows back in the day.

@psyklax Since you said "netbook", I can only assume that it would be well supported. The only stickler would be wireless depending on the chipset you have. I have an Eee PC 901 that I'd love to put either FreeBSD or OpenBSD on, but I have to buy a couple of items to get it working again.
