Seems like I hardly ever read fiction just for fun any more. It's all dense, provocative, chewy nonfiction - and in diminishing amounts, because I've taken something I once liked and made it into a chore.

When, and why, did I start ruining the concept of books for myself? I didn't notice it happening.

Thinking about... the incredible strength of habit. Breaking a habit is one of the hardest things that people still manage to pull off.

Willpower is finite; you expend it on thoughts and behaviors, and replenish it with rest.

When a behavior becomes a habit, it takes much less willpower to do it. Habitual behavior has inertia, requiring more willpower to stop doing it.

There are skills - learnable actions and models - which are useful in changing habits. I think the name for these skills is "discipline."

If I had unlimited time for neato personal projects, one of them would be a single-user Activitypub app, designed to run anywhere and interoperate nicely with as many Fediverse apps as possible, supporting use only by its administrator and with a user interface optimized for this situation.

What if: an open-source clone of The Sims. Open-ended domestic humanoid simulation game. Differentiate from the commercial offering by moving the design in a different direction, deemphasizing built-in goals in favor of stronger end-user programmability. A platform for experimenting with a more humanistic programming model.

Fediverse, hearken unto me. I have a mighty need, and only you can help.

I require articles about things millennials have killed or are killing. As many as you can bring me. Major things or insignificant. Cold takes or hot. Moderately or extremely stupid. Personal or statistical. Everything you've got, as long as you can provide a link to the source.

I wish to admire our handiwork, and the angst it has inspired. I crave this as one lost in the desert craves drink.

    Boosts welcome.
