In other news, I made a little marimo pendant! 💚

As well as being adorable, marimo are sometimes said to bring good luck if you take good care of them. They’re technically a type of chlorophyta algae which very rarely grow into little fuzzy green orbs, found in lakes in Iceland, Scotland, Estonia, and Japan.

They’re particularly famous in Japan where they’re considered a national treasure. Lake Akan in Hokkaido has an annual 3 day marimo festival, organised with the indigenous Ainu people.

The New Horizons spacecraft is due to fly past Ultima Thule, an icy Kuiper Belt Object, at around 5:30 am on January 1st. It’ll scream past at ridiculous speed, and send back the most distant photographs ever taken of anything anywhere.

It’s so far away, that even though those transmissions travel at the speed of light, it’ll take 6 hours before they reach Earth.

I think this sounds like a good start to 2019!

An average car emits 650g of CO₂ per km driven. An average person travels 25km to get to work each day. Commuting by car emits an average of 32.5kg of CO₂ daily. (Based on data from the US.)

An adult tree absorbs up to 21.8kg of CO₂ per year. It would take one tree 1.5 years to absorb what one person can emit in a single day.

In the US alone, over 6 million more cars are registered annually. Each year we destroy 18.7 million acres of forest worldwide, killing roughly 1.1 billion trees.

These lights are not Xmas decorations. I just like having pretty lights in my apartment and now happens to be a time when they're easy to find.

My deepest held and most unflinching belief is that all people, unconditionally and without exception, should have the right to accommodation, food, water, sanitation, education, and basic modern utilities like electricity and internet access.

The fact that there are some people who not only disagree with this but consider it to be a radical opinion, is completely unacceptable TBQH.

Because it's kind of an obsession of mine, so I know a few things. And knowledge, like tea, is always best when shared. 🍵

Remember. Western society tries hard to make us cold and ruthless. An act of kindness is an act of rebellion.
