To get in step with the rest of the world, they added two new weekdays to the (Chinese-derived) traditional five. This is why “Sunday” & “Monday” in Japanese are “Nichiyobi” & “Getsuyobi”, where “nichi” is 日 meaning “sun”, & “getsu” is 月, “moon”.
