@kai I'm just wondering how it is that it uploads many orders of magnitude more data than is required. What is all of that? Is it just uploading the same pictures over and over and just..failing at it?

I swear it wasn't always so horrible. On my old phone I had camera uploads turned on and they all ended up in Dropbox essentially immediately.

I turned on "Camera Uploads" on the dropbox app on my phone, I figured this would be the easiest way to share some recent photos with my parents, and...according to the network stats Dropbox has uploaded over 2Gb and yet all it has accomplished is uploading 3 photos, each 3-4Mb.

    What. The. Heck.

They do have a little Me Too moment side-plot, which if anything just underlines how much of the rest of the plot is a response to the cultural zeitgeist of the early 2000s. It doesn't really translate.

I am not sure what I think about this, having watched it. I generally like anti-superhero stories and am totally desensitized to violence, so I liked that part. But generally it felt anachronistic.

Generic Middle Eastern terrorism, blackmailing gay people for being gay, how all the women are treated, feels like a throwback. This was "edgy" during the Bush II years but now... it's not.

@kai I think we've always had recluses, and they often have valid criticisms of society, but we haven't always had accessible ways to live within society while also outside of it.

I mean go back a few decades and only the rich could truly never leave the house, anyone else would end up homeless.

We, unfortunately, very much treat people outside of society as irrelevant and disposable. NEETs fundamentally challenge this and thus demand an explanation.

In the context of NEETs, have we considered that our society just sucks? Maybe living very online and watching anime all day *is* the rational choice, supposing one has the support network to make it a reality.

Maybe the rest of us are the delusional ones. I mean it isn't *obvious* how working 40+ hours a week at a tedious bullshit job is anything other than a waste of one's life, let alone a path to some grander happiness or fulfillment.

This reminds me of the awkward history of run away settler women in the early British North American colonies.

Settler women taken in raids and subsequently "liberated" and returned frequently ran away back to the indigenous communities that had ostensibly been keeping them captive. It was a real problem.

It is often framed like they were all mentally ill, had Stockholm syndrome or something, but I think the better explanation is just that those British colonies sucked.

This article on NEETs in America, I think, avoids a more obvious explanation https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/02/the-world-of-american-hikikomori.html

When large numbers of people with the means deliberately opt out of society, claiming they're all mentally ill is certainly one explanation...but they could also just have a point.

My current back-up strategy is a box full of freebie usb sticks, unlabelled, which I sometimes remember have stuff on them???

I'm looking for some old music and going on a very disorganized trip down memory lane.

@kai I often get trapped by restaurants that are open all weekend but closed Monday.

Monday is my peak "I don't feel like cooking" day

In many ways I don't mind the crap weather we've been getting, especially between say Thursday night and Sunday morning.

If it's raining suddenly nobody wants to ride their loud af motorcycle through my neighbourhood in the middle of the night.

@kai my bank periodically freezes all transactions on my credit card when I book vacations. Even if I call them in advance to say "I'm going to be booking things in country X" they still have a small conniption.
