instead of thinking about it like "the fedilab dev is charging me money because i use google play", think of it like "the fedilab dev spends time and effort on getting his app to appear on google play (including an app publishing fee), and would like compensation for that effort. the app is still available for free from github and f-droid."

i know of quite a few apps that charge money on google play, and are free from f-droid. this isn't unique to fedilab, and if i had an android app, i'd do something similar.

@rysiek hasn't #Signal demanded people not connect third-party clients to their servers? In fact, any binaries not distributed by them (they refuse to let #FDroid distribute their app). These are only two of many reasons not to support Signal with your unpaid time:
    https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacytools.io/issues/779

I'd recommend working on a native #SailFish client for #Wire instead. They are a) already close to feature parity with Signal b) actively working towards server>server federation:

On its face, conscious consumerism is a morally righteous, bold movement. But it’s actually taking away our power as citizens. It drains our bank accounts and our political will, diverts our attention away from the true powerbrokers, and focuses our energy instead on petty corporate scandals and fights over the moral superiority of vegans.

So if you really care about the environment, climb on out of your upcycled wooden chair and get yourself to a town hall meeting. If there’s one silver lining to the environmental crisis facing us, it’s that we now understand exactly the kind of work we need to do to save the planet—and it doesn’t involve a credit card.

I worry that every time someone claims they are helping the environment by making some activity "more efficient", they will ultimately be proven wrong.

More efficient means cheaper, which means we just do more of whatever it is.

Plane travel is the classic example, but there are others.

If we want to curb emissions, we need to add friction in the right places - which literally means making things more expensive and less competitive. That's a very hard sell in today's world.

We live in a world where stealing our attention is the most profitable business. Yet, knowledge work demands long periods of focused attention to get anything worthwhile done. We must constantly fight to protect our attention from the myriad of digital and physical distractions. Constant distraction is our default state now unless we take active steps to create focus.

The biggest risk to any open source project is not getting enough users to develop a sustainable community. If the project allows secondary objectives to keep users away and compromise its primary mission, it's far more likely it will be unable to reach critical mass.

in my experience there was definitely a feedback loop that happened in education around the time that facebook etc gained popularity: classes that had been about learning how to make web pages suddenly became about how to use existing platforms; when github came out, the parts of programming classes that had been about learning how to share/upload/collaborate on code were replaced with "sign up for a github account" etc. (and as an educator i'm guilty of all of this too)
