I guess I need to clarify: I am going to be replacing Mastodon with something else that costs less to run.

I'm not going anywhere. I am just going to use some other fediverse-compatible software.

I am genuinely happy to have learned about the trick where, if you paste a user's URL or a Toot's permalink into your home-instance's "Search" box, it comes up in your home instance window. This lets you more easily remote follow, or retoot, or favourite stuff that you found in another tab on another server. :)

One problem (that isn't strictly unique to the Fediverse, but appears pretty common here vs. centralised platforms), is that because plenty of people have alts, if you mute or block someone you may find yourself later interacting with them again under a different name or guise without knowing.
I've had a paranoia a few times that I've boosted or followed someone I'd previously designated "fairly toxic", though thankfully it's been a false alarm in all but one case.
Nothing to be done, though 🤷

Sometimes I wonder how many hours humanity has spent trying to explain that "free software" isn't always $0.

I get that "liberated software" is a mouthful, but what about "freed software"?

New idea that solves:

- the ambiguity of "free"
- the confusion of /F?\/?L?OSS/
- the software-specific "source"

I've seen folks refer to "open hardware", could we just do the same with software? It seems to solve all of the problems.

@mayel I've been using https://github.com/superzazu/mastodon-macos for a while, because I really like the feel of the web interface, but have now swotched to https://github.com/saenzramiro/rambox.

That's full Javascript though, so I'll keep my eyes open on what Whalebird does from here on, thanks for the tip.
