The problems with data extraction & user manipulation platform monopolies is fundamental to their business models, not incidental or unexpected. These problems won't go away without a change to the basic rules of the digital game. https://www.opendemocracy.net/neweconomics/oldest-sins-newest-ways/
Like, OK, with Facebook check-ins and news livetweeting, we've seen how social media has become a kind of public utility. Except it's not public. And what with many countries' governments and police, it probably *shouldn't* be publicly owned. But it should be *controlled by the people who use it*. Hence the co-op model.
Obviously the co-op model is just one of many possible ways of running your own social media, but it's one I personally like~
I can't believe #socialcoop is already a year old!

We've still got a long way to go on many fronts, but I'm so grateful to be part of such a thoughtful and committed crew of folks who're sharing the load in making this a Good Place to Be!
We're now the 92nd largest instance in the #fediverse, with 962 registered users, who've tooted 63,409 times. Our #OpenCollective has 138 supporters whose combined contributions give us a current annual budget of $4,028! π
Glad to be part of this important emerging cooperative ecosystem with all of you on #socialcoop and friends on other instances. As we grow and experiment let's keep our eyes on the prize: equality, solidarity, democracy, inclusion, emancipation, [your value here]. #anniversary
Joined social.coop about 7 months ago (214 days ago to be precise).
I'd heard about Mastodon before & had a profile on mastodon.social that I wasn't really using.
Think I most probably heard about social.coop from the CoTech (a forum of UK tech coops.)
Since joining I've learned a lot more about co-ops, got more political, got involved in our reading group, and got a little involved in how our instance works through our Loomio.
@Antanicus I'll be honest :) It took me a long time... and I'm ActivityPub co-editor! We originally brought on @tsyesika because it was clear she understood federation concepts better than I did.
Of course I got it eventually, but I felt I could have gotten it sooner. I'm a very story/example-oriented learner. One goal in writing the ActivityPub overview was to give a story that hopefully made it easier for people to follow it: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#Overview
