@sesivany @brainblasted @federicomena FWIW, I wanted to get back to the desktop team a few years ago, but ended up working on Cockpit.
I love my team! Cockpit is kind of like a desktop for servers. (And it was started by a bunch of GNOME folks too.)
Plus, I'm good with web tech as well as design, so it was a good fit.
In other words, yes, I totally agree the desktop team rocks and there are other excellent teams to be a part of inside of Red Hat too. 😁

@federicomena @brainblasted I hope things turn around!
Did you apply to either Red Hat or SUSE? Were you looking to get into any specific team? (I wonder if we know anyone those teams, if so.)
(I wouldn't have gotten my job at VA Research/VA Software/VA Linux/OSDN originally if I hadn't known someone there who pushed for me after I was originally turned down.
Working at VA then helped to land the job at Red Hat, then Novell/SUSE, and back at Red Hat.)

@federicomena @brainblasted There are a ton of people in the field of software who either don't have a degree or have a degree in something completely different.
I've found often the best people lack a CS/IT or related degree. We often have different backgrounds, bring unique experiences to teams, and work extra hard to prove ourselves to make up for not having a piece of paper and a funny looking hat (a graduation cap, not a red one 😉).

@federicomena @brainblasted Same.
(Well, I couldn't afford to keep going to school because they "lost my records" when I was nearly done and wanted me to *start over from scratch* after 3.75 years.
It's a very uniquely American problem and later I found out the university pulled this scam on several other people too.)
But anyway, I also don't have a degree and have worked with several awesome people who don't have a degree at both Red Hat and SUSE.

@aral What are you planning on doing with the Raspberry Pi 4? Are you intending to use it as a desktop or server?
(It's _supposed to_ be able to run GNOME and a normal web browser at normal desktop speeds now, apparently! It's exciting to have such a little, cheap computer.)

OCR (image-to-text) is a useful tool for designers.
Eventually, you'll get screenshots of text and you might need to rework it somewhat or copy and paste it into an illustration program. Or replicate the text in a mockup. Etc.
Retyping the text is not great.
I'm happy there's a decent OCR app in Flathub now, even if it's a little slow. (To speed it up, select the regions yourself instead of using auto-detection.)

@cassidyjames I wish I would be there, but it won't work out this year again. (Most likely going to be there next year though, wherever it is!)
Regardless, looking forward to the video of your talk (and the further discussion it'll spark)! 👍

@ossington I saw someone mention doing this a week or two ago and I was kind of shocked at the idea.
I meant to try it — as it is so odd — but I normally drink my coffee without additives, so it might be ultra-revolting.
I'm having second thoughts now. (However, I guess I still need to try it... but now with less coffee to most-likely ruin.)

My ankle is still swollen and still hurting. It's been a two and a half months. I'm told sometimes it takes "up to 3 months".
Some days it's worse than others. It's less bad than the first week at least.
I'm still hobbling around in pain.

@amydentata "I've made a list of some of my recent symptoms over the past week…"
*drops a stack of paper the size of War and Peace on the doctor's desk*
(The doctor can no longer see the patient… literally. Even though it has been printed double-sided, in tiny fonts, there's too much paper in the way.)

So #GitLab Pages has finally rolled out their automatic #LetsEncrypt integration for hosted web sites. It's quite painless and automatically renews certs. So glad that I don't have to manually do this or maintain some brittle CI-based scripts anymore.
If you've got a GL-hosted site, take the next 90 seconds and go secure it!

My new bot, @SecretlyPublicDomain, highlights pre-1964 books that entered the public domain because their copyright wasn't renewed.
Until May, it wasn't possible to find these books on a large scale. Now it is: https://www.crummy.com/2019/07/22/0

People talk like blocking fascists automatically turns any space into an "echo chamber". The fediverse we've built up over the years is proof of the contrary. I've learned and grown through this place. I've been able to apply that knowledge in real life. We've got something real here, and I think it's with fighting to preserve. -

@andreas The issue author verified that Firefox is not affected by the vulnerability. One more reason to switch.
