now, the way I deal with propaganda is not to dismiss it entirely, that makes one prone to go along with the other side's propaganda. I try to find what makes sense in it, to contrast it with observable reality and with what's claimed by the other side or sides. that's how I seek truth in the mess of lies that wars, even proxy wars, bring about.
but it amazes me how resilient the effects of western propaganda seem to be. they’re like a mind’s vaccine against the ideas that could threaten the dominant imperial regime we're under: any idea that threatens that installed belief is labeled as opponent’s propaganda and dismissed entirely. those affected seem to lose the ability to separate the bits of (supposed) opponent’s propaganda from bits that might be worth looking into, so strong the mind’s vaccine’s reaction is. how do they do that? how can we defend from that, if not by looking into what the other sides say in their attempts to point out holes in the dominant narratives?
and what conclusion do you draw from that? I've seen enough of scenarios such as "bully provokes someone else into aggression, the latter gets identified and punished for the aggression, but the bully doesn't and goes on to make other victims, direct and indirect" to make an effort to avoid leaping to conclusions. that there's one obvious aggressor here doesn't imply that there isn't another one lurking and getting away with their act.
when someone acts in self-defeating ways, it's not unreasonable to look for what misled them. whoever most benefits from that decision becomes the null hypothesis for explaining it. add in mass media campaigns around it, and there you have additional evidence. throw in a history of meddling, supported by leaked cables and manuals of how to overthrow hostile governments and put in friendly ones, realize we're talking about the most powerful nation in the planet, one that's involved in conflicts all over, and, well, it would be quite a challenge to imagine that it was *not* involved somehow. now, the leap you made about concluding that Ukraine's decision was invalid... I'm still at self-defeating and likely manipulated. very likely just as provoked as the invasion.
now, detecting and reporting on meddling does not amount to being against sovereignty or for autonomy, does it? knowing it's a common occurrence at all levels and sides, and taking that into account can make one a bit cynical, but it doesn't amount to taking sides. whereas denouncing meddling, as I do, does amount to defending sovereignty and autonomy, from whichever direction the attacks come from. meddling with people's elections is not cool, whether it's in Ukraine, UK, US or elsewhere. but realizing such things happen anyway does not make one supportive thereof, does it?
