Friendly reminder. Full disk encryption on a server you have no physical access to grants you no security, same for your laptop if you carry it around in sleep mode. FDE protects your data at rest as from a cold boot you need to provide the passphrase. If your box is running the secret is present in memory and can be grabbed by a dedicated attacker.

For the same reason, when approaching border control, TURN OFF your phone, just locking the screen is often not enough.

Need ideas for a new years resolution? Feel free to pick one.

    1. Start using a password manager (keepassxc)

    2. Start using 2 factor authentication

    3. Try out a #BSD on your laptop/desktop/server (#OpenBSD)

    4. Contribute to a software project you like (ie. port a game to #OpenBSD, donate $$, help with the docs)

    5. Self host your email

Spent the last 30 minutes playing with the dog in the snow (it's almost 1 am here).

    Agenda was:
    1. Who can ROLL down the hill fastest
    2. Fetching snowballs downhill & uphill
    3. Hide & seek behind pine trees
    4. Bury beneath the snow
    5. Run until you are out of breath

I can barely catch my breath now, but damn that was fun and the doggo is ultra happy.

Mastodon doesn't use smart algorithms to fill my feed with 'interesting content' and yet I find more interesting things here than on twitter.

Note to twitter: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Seriously, will it take someone to sit down at McDonalds, hacking all phones in the vicinity & publishing their contents online before anyone considers lack of security updates from a vendor a problem?

This should be a legal viability.

What tricks do you use to self-motivate yourself for work?

Clerk at a shop was convincing me that installing the $brand loyalty Android/iOS app was a good deal. I declined stating privacy reasons and was surprised as she asked why.

So I asked her if it would be OK in me having information on:
    - where & when she shops
    - what she buys
    - with whom she meets
    - how often she uses the toilet
    - and potentially leaking that information online by accident
in exchange for a 20% price cut on a deodorant.

She uninstalled the app on the spot. No joke.
