It's not yet time to panic, but I'm considering shuttering this instance. The Mastodon experience is no longer filling me with joy.

To my users: there's no rush, but you may want to start looking for other instances. If the decision is made, and every day I suspect it's more likely, I'll give you time to download your content and migrate. (A month, say?)

I just confirmed it with the Mastodon guys, that's definitely how it works.

It's a huge problem, IMO. It vastly restricts the usefulness of smaller instances.

Mastodon's hashtag search is limited to local data. This includes every post the nfg.zone instance knows about, and so will include posts made elsewhere.

Unfortunately the search doesn't replicate across the fediverse and bring in data from other instances.

It sucks, I'm sorry.

A long time ago I assembled a fairly decent collection of videogame ringtones from my favourite old games.

They're sorted by length: ringtones, short ringtones, and super-short notification sounds.

There's nothing quite like having a phone or computer that makes happy sounds when you get a message, instead of the corporate team-built focus-grouped inoffensive dreck that ships with your apps.

There's been some discussion about custom emojis on Mastodon, and some people are worried about copyright, attribution and so on.

IMO, it's a fools mission. Whenever there's a scenario where something cannot be controlled or enforced, I think it's silly to try. Educate, if you want, but don't expect technical solutions to impossible problems.
